| Trying to defend yourself with weapons will get you in trouble. I've had men here telling me to come to their houses and sleep with them, whilst grabbing my hand and trying to drag me. It does happen, don't let anyone tell you Korea is the land of candy and rainbows. There are some right nutters here. What I usually do is walk into a shop until they go away, or tell someone they're harrassing you. |

Thanks for all the help. I did take a basic self-defense class in the U.S. as well as a kickboxing class, but god forbid I find myself in a situation where I actually have to try using that stuff. I didn't even carry pepper spray in the U.S. since I lived in a small town, so this is pretty new territory for me. I like the idea of a safety whistle. I will definitely be investing in one of those today.
A safety flashlight sounds good too, but please note I said 8:30 am not pm, which makes this whole thing seem even weirder to me. Maybe they were still drunk and just going home. Who knows.
I'm sorry to hear that some of you have had similar experiences. But I guess there are crazy perverts in every country, huh? I'm going to make it a point to be more vigilant from now on. Luckily nearly everyone else I've met here has been very friendly and helpful |

I know you can't really buy it in Korea, but it can be imported.
Maybe customs aren't looking hard enough, but I know people who have imported pepper spray. |

Do women carry mace or pepper spray in Korea? If so, can anyone tell me where to find it and what it's called?
Had an experience today with a nasty couple of middle-aged men who stopped their car in the middle of a cross walk I was trying to go across and they tried to get me into their car. Obviously it was extremely unpleasant and scary, and after that I feel like I need something stronger than a "F*** off!"
Any other women have an experience like this? I'm still a newbie here and if this is common for women walking through town alone (not even at night, I'm talking 8:30 a.m.) I might have to reconsider how long I'll be staying here. |
I know and see plenty of girls walking home at 2 in the morning half drunk, seriously. It most likely was a random and isolated occurrence, you shouldn't let that taint your view of Korea. My question to you(since Koreans usually aren't that bold towards foreigners) is What were you wearing? Where was this at? Using mace will only get you sued and possibly jailed. |

I was wearing jeans, sneakers, a short-sleeve top (not low-cut) and an orange scarf. I was walking back to my apartment after walking with my husband to his school that morning. This happened on a normal street, about a block from a convenience store. No dark alleys, I wasn't dressed like a hooker, and I had headphones on which usually seems to deter anyone from bothering me at least a little (I like to try to avoid the "HARO HOW AH YOU??"). It scared me a lot for the reasons you've stated-- because usually they aren't that bold towards foreigners. I have long blonde hair, maybe it draws too much attention. Should I wear a head scarf from now on?
(only half joking... I was thinking of getting a hat to cover most of my hair so it's not as obvious...) |

| I know in America, they tell women to yell "Fire!" if they are being attacked. Maybe if you learned the Korean word for fire it could work. Or is that against the law too? |

why don't you try buying a travel-sized bottle of hairspray or some breath spray? both of those, when aimed at the eyes, will sting. you can always try to deny any wrong-doing later (if the police become involved), and just say that you always carry those things in your purse and/or it was an accident.
i would definitely not try carrying a weapon; i read somewhere that it's more likely for the weapon to be used against the victim than on the attacker. the spray will be a surprise and will probably just buy you a minute or so. |

| This is a good thread. And there def should be a thread about the laws related to protecting ones self. That being said, I got my mom to send me a little container of pepper spray in the mail. So long as it isn't illegal to carry it, I would choose to use it if I was in a tight situation, regardless if the Koreans turn the law around on me! Better safe than sorry. |

| You can get pepper spray in Korea. My school ordered some off the internet for me a few years ago after some arsehole grabbed hold of me in the day time, in a busy shopping area, and no one helped...get some, i spent 4 years in Korea and always carried it with me. |

Why not just carry hairspray, deodorant, or fly spray for that matter? Whatever you spray in their face it's not going to be pleasant. As long as you can get to it in a hurry I don't see why you would necessarily need mace or pepper spray. |

Pepper spray has range. The other things the perp will have to be 5 feet or closer to be effective. You can pepper spray someone from like 5 meters away in some cases.
The spray doesn't shoot out a "cloud" of liquid. It shoots out a stream so that when you push the button you can then aim the stream at the perp's face. Think of it like a watergun, not like hair spray.
At least that's what they are SUPPOSED to do. |
