for going out at night, is it worth it to take a 1 hr train to Busan from Daegu, since the nightlife in Daegu is lacking?
or is it too much of a hassle? |

Definitely worth it once in awhile (especially in the summer). Busan is only an hour away and the KTX is only 11,000 so it's not costly by any means. Busan's nightlife is certainly better, but Daegu's nightlife isn't so horrid that you will need to get out of the city every weekend.
Anyhow, it's more about the people you meet. If you have a good set of friends, you'll have a great time wherever you are. |

I've never "lacked" for anything to do Daegu. In fact, having spent time in both cities, I find Daegu's nightlife to be easier, since it's centralized, rather than spread out all over the city like Busan.
Edit to add: The cost of living in Daegu is also MUCH cheaper than Busan. My girlfriend and I rent a 4-bedroom house 5 minutes from downtown for 400,000/month (2 mil key money). |

Daegu is a complete shithole - boring nightlife, not too much to see or do....
Busan is pretty cool - ok nightlife, lots to do and see, and great beaches in the summer.
Seoul is the best city however. You can easily take trips to anywhere else at the weekends. |

Spoken like someone who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. |

I've lived a year in both places. If I could have my same job and benefits in Busan I would be there. I am not a club person any longer, so I can't speak on that, but I prefer Busan for weather (Vancouver versus Winnipeg) and for things to do and see (Busan: decent beaches, film festivals. Daegu: a mountain temple and, uh... a mountain temple). I find Busan people more direct and friendly with their burpin', fartin' openness, and Daegu people more conservative and cliquey.
You might decide on the basis of your job and apartment, as you are not looking at a night or day difference, but I would give Busan the edge. I'd still rather live in either than Seoul (Toronto). Just my preference.
Heyyy... I am from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Yes, none of these winters are going to compare to that. |

I'm in the process of making a choice between Busan and Daegu. My recruiter (YBM ECC) is steering me towards Daegu because the positions in Busan are a lot more competitive. I have a 4 year English degree and a 120+ TESOL cert, but no teaching experience so I am guessing I will be waiting a while if I want a position in Busan.
Does Daegu have any problems with pollution?
This is what my recruiter said, is it true?
"If you are looking for the laid back and friendly atmosphere,'Koreas Southern Hospitality.' This is the location for you. Its also the places for hiking, as it is surrounded by mountains, and has more of the foreigner star appeal compared to Seoul or Busan."
I feel like he may be trying to steer me to a place that no one wants to go. I have no problem with the road less traveled or being isolated from westerners. I don't want to live in Seoul because I have heard from natives that the vibe there is more like New York city, more of a dog eat dog state of mind, rush, rush, lack patience for foreigners ect.
I like hiking, the outdoor, riding my bike, playing guitar (hoping to join a band). I am from Seattle, I don't like crowded places, I like people who are laid back, patient and polite.
So wait for Busan or go with Daegu? |

After living in both cities for a year, I'd choose Busan in a heartbeat.
This is the first time that I agree with more or less every previous comment. |

It depends on where you're working/living at in Daegu, but if you're near downtown or any place where the fun stuff is, don't count on much 'foreigner appeal.'
Busan, hands down. Everything is a bit more spread out but there is more to do and is a better living environment as a whole. |

Daegu, definitely! I lived in Daegu for 3 years. Not at all close to DT, or where all the "fun stuff is" and I loved it! Although, that being said, nothing is terribly far when you live close to one of the subway lines. It only took me 20-30 mins to get downtown, and I was close to the end of one of the lines.
Most of the posts are promoting Busan because of the beach. While it is nice, unless you live close to it, it isn't a relevant point. You can live in Busan, and still take you an hour or more to get to the beach! Depending on where you live in Busan, you can potentially get to the beach faster from Daegu! (and when I say beach, I am referring to the main beach area, Haeundae. There maybe smaller beach areas that I am unaware of)
Also, like previous posts stated, Daegu has a more close knit foreign community, lots of clubs, teams, ect.
In my opinion, Daegu is a great place to live, and Busan is a great place to visit ;o) |
