I also have several promising leads at universities in China.
Definitely missing my Jangsan, Haeundae, Busan lifestyle at the moment.[/quote]
Some comments from the "China" gallery now...universities pay in China is usually the lowest on the spectrum for all teaching jobs in China. It is hard to cross US $2000 a month - even $1,500 per month with a university job. There are still many universities in Beijing that pay about $1,000 a month and include a free dorm, often a hotel sized apartment (bed with bathroom) which may or may not be big enough to have its own kitchen, but after all, the prestige of working in a Beijing U should be enough compensation on its own, right? Private universities may pay more but you don't have the luxury that you have in Korea of getting your taxes back in any job in China. Some schools will advertise an "after tax" salary rate but you have to be careful with these. You need to make sure they will give you the tax receipt for the taxes that they "paid" for you. Without a receipt, it is very difficult to convert rmb to other currencies or send money home. You may or may not get free accommodations. There is no pension system. You will most likely be granted medical insurance - you may have to pay for a part of it - but often it is little more than "owie" insurance. You mentioned you want the freedom to make your own curriculum - in China you will find that you get this, but you will seldom get unlimited access to a copy machine. Also, many, many contracts in China - you need to read the very, very fine print - do not pay you for ALL vacations (usually not the summer vacation) and there is seldom a contract completion bonus. Many only pay you for 9 or 10 months. There are a few language centers that have started offering this in the past few years. Airfare reimbursement is not guaranteed to be what it actually costs you to get to China and back. Right now, most ads I have seen are still reimbursing what they paid 6 or 7 years ago, though I guess airfare hasn't gone up, huh?? |
