I've used it dozens of times but look to see if they have seats available. You can also try www.toptravel.co.kr |

I would highly recommend trying Marco Polo in Itaewon. There are still many possibilities right now. I got a trip to SEA just a few hours ago to depart on Friday night. Direct Thai Airways flights to Bangkok were like 720,000 (can't remember the exact number), but I also got a round trip flight from Bangkok to Yangon added; all for a total of 890k. Not bad considering it's a good itinerary of direct flights on what is said to be a very good airline that's described to be, "smooth as silk," featuring exceptionally nice eye candy on staff. I'm so thrilled!
I didn't ask about Luang Prabang since I'm not going to Laos this time, but I'm sure it's possible if you inquire. |

yeah its not that bad price wise going onward from bkk on thai, you can likely get a connecting thai flight to vientiene the same say if you take one of the morning flights to bkk on thai there used to be an evening flight, then lao airlines to lp for like $80 each way vientiene is fine for a day or two, lao airlines is fine for the tourist routes. you can also grab an air asia flight to udon dirt cheap and take a bus to the border but you would have to overnight in bkk
other options are to take a bus from vte to lp 12 hours with a stop in vv, not fun if you ask me.
bangkok airways goes direct from bkk to lp, expensive though you will also have to overnight in bkk again no matter who you take to bkk
finally you can grab an air asia flight to chiang rai then bus it to the border and take the 2 day boat to lp |

Also worth checking Thai Airways site now too as I just checked again to see what was going on and I noticed my trip is going for 199k less than what it quoted over the weekend. I just also seen I paid 77k more than their site now quotes, but I'm still happy about my purchase from Marco. Many possibilities abound.
I must be going on vacation a week later than most which is fine. |

Luang Prabang is probably my favourite place on earth. Beautiful, friendly, cheap and completely chilled out.
As for flights, you might find it cheaper/easier to get to the capital city Vientiane first and then get a flight to Luang Prabang. |
It certain seems to have it all based on my research:
French colonial architecture; wonderful unspoiled nature all around; modern amenities combined with local, authentic charm; romantic & atmospheric streets, neighborhoods, and surroundings; and great Asian cuisine at an affordable price.
What do you think it might be like to live in Luang Prabang for anywhere between 2-4 months each year? Too boring? |
That about sums it up
Depends on the sort of person you are really, I managed to spend a fortnight there by myself on a shoestring budget (around $20 a day I think, great food+accom inclusive) without getting bored in the slightest. Spent my days wandering the backstreet markets and exploring temples and then sat overlooking the stunning Mekong River each evening with a couple of BeerLao. Bliss.
If you've got a bigger budget then there's countless river trips, hikes, bike rides, caves and surrounding villages to keep you occupied too. So long as you were to pace yourself I think a few months is pretty doable, especially if you're with friends or a significant other.
In fact, I really ought to check out what the market for ESL teachers is like in Laos... |
Thanks. I'm really looking forward to my trip.
What other SE Asian cities have you visited? Any other place evoke the same feeling?
I'm looking at Puerto Princesa in the Philippines right now...looks great so far by photos at least. |

| OP, we'd like to hear what you found to be the cheapest and fastest way to Luang Prabang. Myanmar is said to be the other place evoking times past. Instead of French colonial, it's British colonial style. I'm looking forward to seeing it. |

If you want to hit Puerto Princesa, refer to this thread. I was there from late Feb. to early March.

But I hear it's difficult to even get Internet or check work e-mail in Myanmar (e.g. using Skype reliably) as the Internet is censored/blocked/filtered? |

yes this is true.. also make sure you bring crispy clean USdollar bills with no tears or stains on them.. or they will not accept them...
there are no money machines and they don't take credit cards in the backpacker roots.. |

Sad to hear Luang Prabang is getting ruined by excessive tourism.
I'm hoping Palawan has pure nature still surviving. |

yeah net acess can be difficult there, had no real problems in yangon or bagan, inle and mandalay were totally different stories, people who run the net cafes know the workarounds |

totally agree with you on all of this, i've done 6 days on a horse cart in bagan and its a much easier way to see the temples. last year when there my driver took me to a remote temple for sunset which was incredible (except for the american couple who wanted to do a nude shot at the temple before me and my friend arrived but thats another story)
didnt do the trek at inle but still loved it last year. my guesthouse was along the road where most of the monasteries are, in the evening nothing like reading to the sounds of monks chanting.
not sure where it was but was sitting with some people having a beer and we were lamenting that when the junta decides to really open the place up or say the discovery or travel channels do a show on the place it will be "ruinined" like lp etc. nice thing is i'll be able to say "i remember myanmar before the tourists hit" |
