There is some merit in this thread. I read that part of the reason Japan is in an economic slump is that they are not learning English. Learning English creates opportunities in ways other languages do not.

or at some point they might just give up and relax for once.
I'd like to see the turning point in Korea when they realise that No.1 spot is unachievable and start to focus more on enjoying life instead.

Korea is number 1!

I would like to thank JanafromOhio. Since I first read this thread...I have studied ship building...it's complexities...and its terminology.

My Elementary School students are a little bored with the way our new lessons are going...but I assure them that they need to learn English...to build ships.

We have even started building a ship.

It's really improved my condition.

I've just spent a year teaching in Geoje and socialising with engineers.

The article misses at least one very important category. Korea is rated number one for quality... in Samgsung Shipyards, they specialise in ocean going Oil exploration vessels.

Apparentley, Samsung is building the next generation of these vessels beginning next year. It is twin hulled and state of the art in everything. Its designed to do both Artic and Sub Antarctic drilling and exploration. The cost of this vessel is incredible and it's just the first of many

The way the world now sees offshore drilling after the Gulf of Mexico disaster I'd say that it's not all doom and gloom. Although, I personally believe the sooner Oil exploration is curtailed the better. But these vessels are a good short term option until another fuel source can be mainstreamed

I only met a couple of westerners doing ESL, at the same company, the work sounded really boring. Basically deskwarming with maybe an hour or two proofreading a day, average pay.

One guy had been a teacher on Geoje, got offered the job and then got his mate a job at the same company.

I don't know where the jobs would be listed. The engineers I know that work in company offices already have staff who can speak English. Some of the Korean Staff are on big money because of their language and foreign working skills/experience.

Business wise, it seems Korea is now thinking globally more than ever, especially now that they understand they need to go globally to survive.

Korea is bad, but I think Japan's worse.
