the US Air Force base in Songtan is about a 10 minute train ride north or you can take bus #2 that takes 40 min. Its a great place to shop, eat mexican, thai, brazilian, indian and a whole lot more black market goods. A lot more livelier than the the army base in pyeontaek.

Any more info on this subject? What school do you know of that has been good? Why is it better than the others? Is there anything dramatically negative or really important to know about other school in the area?

Definitely join the facebook group, it helped me meet some people when I first moved there! Also, just so you know the subway takes up to 2 hours to get to Seoul. It's much faster to take a train.

There are a few good restaurants: Indian, Vietnamese, Italian and many others in Songtan as mentioned. There are also 3 movie theaters and 2 department stores. I lived in 3 other Korean cities and I like Pyeongtaek the best.

Definitely some things to do there and plenty of black market food stores. A lot of people have fun there.

Yes, I have arrived! I like it so far... today I had my first frustrated day... also do any of you know how to set up cable/internet at your apartment? I asked my co-teacher and she seemed clueless about the process... then she got me a wicked high quote on basic tv and high speed internet 63,000 Won a month... does that seem normal or high to any of you?

Shop around from LG Powercomm, SK broadband or Qook. Her rate is quite high for a tv/internet combo.

I am completely at her mercy right now though because I cannot speak/read Korean and I do not know who to call or what my address is yet (even)... been trying to get answers but my co-teacher's English is quite horrible... hoping someone can help me... maybe english speaking contact numbers?

Hi all, I read through this tread and was hoping to get some follow up on the city as I will be moving there shortly. I had some serious reservations at first, there is an unfortunate amount of English websites that emphasize the seedier side on Songtan.
Any advise on coming to Pyongtaek and settling into Korea. I studied Korean for a few years at University so I can get by in Korean and I have a decent familiarity with the culture from Korean friends in Vancouver.
Any replies would be welcome.

It's dirty. But there are several hundred prostitutes working right next to the subway station (if that's your thing or if you prefer to live around that kind of stuff)

I'm moving there to start work on at the beginning of September.

The school is very close to the station. My hope is this means I can live a couple of stops away and commute. While I'm sure it is welcome relief for some, the westernization or concentration of western people, foods and English is not really why I learned Korean or chose to move to Korea.
However, I just received word from my recruiter that my job is on unsteady footing due to some last minute budget stuff in Gyongi --I'm livid. I already quit my job and made arrangements to come. Any advice from those of you on the ground? How is this playing out there?
