I did that exact same trip. Late night from Incheon - Manila, then bus to Clark and then on to KL. Definitely was a pain in the butt, but it did save a bit of money. If I was taking a long trip and had time to waste I'd do it again, but not for a one or two week trip.

I liked the Philippines, but it doesn't have the charm Thailand or the small part of Vietnam I saw had, and I still want to see more of Malaysia and Indonesia, so I doubt I'll ever go back to the Philippines.

I think given enough time, any country has the potential to become a great country by most measures. And well, the new president did create a facebook page for filipinos to report instances of corruption. Who knows? Only time will tell.

Filipinos are jaded toward politicians who promise change and a better life, and I don't blame them. They've been raped and pillaged throughout their history by the Spanish, the Americans and their own to the point that they simply laugh at their troubles instead of hoping for change.

I remember talking to a few knowledgeable people about the Phils. While the rest of Southeast Asia will see improvement in the standard of living over the next few decades, the Phils will probably see the status quo maintained.

Generally speaking, that is absolutely true, but I did notice from talking to some filipinos that they do seem fairly optimistic about the new president Benigno Aquino III. As someone who would like to see progress in that country, I would like to think that optimism is not misplaced. At the very least, lets hope that he can get the ball rolling so to speak in getting the Philippines back on track.

Won't that website crash in about a day?

Hahaha. I don't think so as I first read about it around a week ago. If it had crashed, I suspect we would have heard it by now.

The funny thing is, the Filipinos have revolted under unjust governments like Marcos, so I'm wondering why there hasn't been more done to resolve the horrendously huge gap between the haves and have nots in the country.

At any rate, it'll be nice to have more flight options when traveling to the Phils.

You mean like the multitude of attempts at a Coup d'tat, mutiny or failed impeachments that have occurred since 1986?

Unless my memory is amiss there has been at least 1 EVERY YEAR and many years have had several including at least 2 "people power revolutions" (one against ERAP and one against GMA) since the Marcos overthrow.

At least one president was ousted from office (Erap), Cory had no less than 7 major coup attemps against her government, GMA had to deal with attempted impeachments, mutiny and at least 2 attempted coups.

As long as the power and wealth of the country are controlled by the top 80 families life is not going to change any time soon for the other 97 or so million average Filipinos in the PI - sad to say.

Filipinos overthrew a dictator (Marcos) who had been called the worst in history in oppressing his people yet most Filipinos live in utter squalor. What good is changing the president if the ordinary lives of the people don't change (and often worsens)?

Perhaps I'm as jaded as Filipinos in thinking little or nothing will change even under the much heralded new president Noy Noy.

That said, the Phils is a fun country to visit.

More info on the Incheon-Clark flight. www.072.com is advertising 507,000 won without tax (but budget carriers usually charge around 35,000 won in tax). Departure time is 9:30 p.m. from Incheon and arrival at 12:40 a.m. in Clark. From Clark, departure time is 1:40 a.m. and arrival is 6:20 a.m.

That is not a discount airfare. That's on the expensive side.

I'm thinking it's expensive now because the flights are chartered but check back when the route goes full fledged in October or November. And contrary to what people might think, Angeles City is not just a big red-light district. Koreans (including many families) go there to learn English, play golf or run businesses.

Are you sure? I remember one time when I was flying to Manila, there was another Westerner sitting next to me. We started talking. At some point, he said that he was going to take cab to Angeles City in order to have fun with the ladies. But of course, I have never been there. So, maybe, you are right.

I was in Angeles City in March to visit a Korean friend. I had planned to just stay one night but ended up staying one more. The reason was that Angeles was amazing in that there were so many Korean businesses there and most of the Filipinos there spoke a bit of Korean. There were Korean families living there, plenty of students learning (or not learning) English, and golfers galore. At this rate, Angeles and Clark Freeport will become known as a Korean joint (in addition to certain areas of Manila, Cebu, Davao and Baguio) as well as a red-light district. Of course, those who seek carnal pleasures can find it but that's not all there is to Angeles.

Sure, they revolted but they ended up with the same horribly corrupt elite running the country as they had before. Basically, fifty-odd families run the place like a private fiefdom for their own good. I actually dated a member of said clique a couple of years back (a very, very well connected family) and the stuff she told me made the hair on my neck curl.

The huge majority of people in the Philippines live in poverty, ignorance and hopelessness and the ruling class and the church want to keep it that way.

Yet the average happiness level of a Filipino far exceeds that of a Korean (or American or European). Go figure.

The Jin Air flight to Angeles City aka Clark Air Field starts Oct. 26. Prices range from 199,000 to 800,000 won on Jin Air's homepage.

Jin Air also will start its Incheon-Macau route Nov. 29.
