The dancing IS terrible, but that kind of terrible that is awesome. For me, anywho. But yeah the dancing is more in korea, but so is the amount of skin shown.
I'm more interested in the music, and Japan beats Korea hands down there.
Whether this Japanese example was good or not, it is produced much better, it is using much more advanced techniques that are modern and they are less afraid to take their music to new places. So... I generally like Japanese music much more. |
I think the difference is that Japan is taking more of a techno robotic/autotune and that Korea is taking more of a Hip-pop route. And both seem to enjoy having girl groups for older men to enjoy and feminine boy bands for girls to scream over. 
Personally, I enjoy both K-pop and J-pop. That may mean I have poor taste in music by certain standards, but meh. It wouldn't be the first time.
Although J-pop may be more accepting of the 'risks' that are being taken in their music, I do find a lot of it going to the same sort of Vocaloid path. Kind of like how once one of k-pop girl groups started dressing more 'sexy', all the others started to.
I don't think neither Japan or Korea have ever quite suceeded in being 'western', though I may also not fully understand what you mean by that either. Are we talking about breaking the market? Becoming more popular with western folk? Sounding more like the stuff you'd hear in North America or Europe? I think both have had some real hits, but they've also had some real misses.
Granted, I haven't seen Korean music videos from the early 2000s, but I think they have a better grasp on MTV style music videos than Japan does. But I think that's because every time I think of Western- Japanese MVs, I think of this:

I think you can find some good/interesting muscians in both countries though. I find artists like Clazziquai, Cherry Filter and Younha are nice breaks from the usual Girl/Boy Band stuff you see. By Korea's standards, I'd say they're trying out new territory and singing from the heart.
I'll admit, Japanese-wise, I'm into the mainstream stuff like Utada and Crystal Kay (I just prefer their deeper voices). Though now that you showed Perfume, Globutron, I am getting a bit more curious about them. I'm sorta out of the loop for new J-pop singers.
Yeah... I think I got sorta sidetracked from what the original topic of this thread was.
Radius, although I couldn't really care for the group either, I think 2ne1 is being praised for being different by Korean standards. You know, like if suddenly there was a teen/tween band on MTV only playing jazz in top hats. It's totally been done before, but by todays American Pop standards, they'd be pretty different. |

| OP, I can completely sympathize. The other day I was walking to school and saw this boy enjoying a bag of cone-shaped corn chips. I smacked them out of his hand and gave him a lesson on how they are just a cheap knockoff of Bugles. |

A lot of K-pop is tolerable. Some of it is even good. Wondergirls new song is great.
American pop music is horrible. Kesha? Rihanna? It's all just so infuriating. I'm not saying K-pop is good, but it's much better than American pop.
A turd in my ear is better than American pop. |

KPop is often hacked and ripped off.
Then again I bet in the future we are going to see more an more Hollywood movies that are shoddy remakes of Korean films. Of course the difference is royalties will be paid. However the Hollywood films will be unwatchable where as Kpop is tolerably listenable.
Everyone rags pop music or bands like AC/DC but to write music that is enjoyable to a large number of people and is "catchy" is not an easy thing to do.
As to the OP- the girl was insecure for not being able to handle the truth. The teacher was insecure for becoming so argumentative and obsessed over such things. |

Eh... I hope not. Have seen many Korean films, have only liked 1 or 2. Pretty much any genre of Korean movie has a turning point where it becomes overdramatic to the point of hilarity. And the Korean tough guy character is also just as funny. |

Almost all hip-hop made after 1996 should be outlawed. Just like any R&B from the past 20 years, especially the past 10.
Is anyone else annoyed by this R&B/ hip-hop/ pop fusion crap that's everywhere now? I call it chick-hop. It's f'ing horrible. The way they dress, act, the way the music sounds, what they stand for, it's all garbage.
Rap music used to be about kicking some ass. I liked to put on some good angry rap and hit the heavy bag. Rap these days makes you feel like there's a vagina opening up between your legs.
What the hell happened to heavy metal too?
God damn it, I hate R&B. |

I don't generally see change as bad.
As linkin park aptly put it in their new album: once you have the theory of how the thing works, everybody wants the next thing to be just like the first.
And I think that rings true for so many people, everyone I know minus 1 and myself. |
