That's a prime reason for changing to an E1. All of the teachers at my uni have at least one masters. BUt they still won't change us Sad

E1 Rocks.

No transcripts, no medical check, no crb check AND whenever I need to go to Immigration, I just head straight to the professor's lounge. Usually in and out in less than 20 minutes. Very Happy

I'm so jealous. Your immigrations has a professors' lounge? Ours doesn't. Though our DOS has some connections and gets us taken to another place in immigrations and gets us out just as fast.

Anyone know what unis DO give E1? I know that Yeungnam does. Others?

Must be in Seoul. Suwon just has a Chinese section.

You don't need to get a criminal records check and heath check if you have an E1. An E1 could never have a criminal record or be unhealthy.....Also, as funny as it sounds, it makes changing your home driver's license into a Korean driver's license a lot easier. There may be other benefits I am not aware of.

Don't get this. I'm on an E2 and have been here seven years. So far I've been to immigration (took about 10 min) and had a medical check once. Once a year someone at work asks me for my passport and alien card and a few days later it comes back with a new visa stamp in it. How come it's such a big deal?

Many universities require E-1's to do a criminal records check for the University, even if it is not for immigration. And, the same is true for the health check. Read some ads here for E-1 positions and you will see that. And, if it is not in their ad, they will require them later as Korean Universities have this huge application form that goes on forever requiring tons of things for the E-1. I know. I have had both E-1 and E-2 a few times my 12 years in Korea at different universities. E-2 is easier. Oh, and the criminal checks for E-1's that are just for the university's requirement, those started long before immigration required checks for E-2.

PS: It once took me over three months to satisfy all of the university requirments for an E-1 (two of which were the crime check and the health check, and that included HIV.)

Edwardcatflap you need to actually keep up with things.

This is the second time I need to tell you that what you have done in the past is not enough anymore.

You too will be required to submit an FBI check every year along with your health check. Both of these are new regulations which all E2 teachers must comply with renewing or not.

That is why some E2's are more interested now in graduating to an E1 which does not have these checks.

In fact, I have never had to get a criminal background check due to the timing of when I got the different visas that I have had. And yes, I currently have an E-1 visa just like you. However, I did have to get a medical checkup (after I already had my ARC) but that was just for the university's medical insurance.

Thanks for your concern but I'm still a bit mystified. I just renewed, (late August) and there was no mention of any of this. Still, if it does come in I'd be quite happy to have a free medical check every year (my company pays for them) to see if there's anything I need to worry about. I had a CRC a few years ago, which involved filling in a form, it took about twenty minutes I think. The office did the rest

And you teach English? As an English instructor? It is a bit mystifying because everybody else on an E2 had to get a Criminal record since July this year and the Medical has been around at least that long.

Are you sure you are E2 because it doesn't sound like you are.
