When SED took over my old uni's LEC program last year they showed me a really funny little contract that called for my wife and I to move out of our current house and into a dorm room, working hours from 6:30 am to 9pm monday to friday-- 6:30 to 12 pm on Saturday, and no vacation-- I was getting six weeks a year before. At first I thought it was a joke, but they were serious. They pointed out that they had increased the pay by 100,000 won, so that makes it all good, right?  |

| I was sent one last week from Woosong Univ. A third of the clauses refer to a policy book. The last sentence says that signing the contract means you agree to everything in the policy book. I haven't seen the policy book. I'll give you one guess as to whether or not I'm going to sign this contract. |

| Hmm, well there was that one I posted on here a week or so ago...they can make me work whenever they want, fire me for pretty much any reason, only give me my legally required severance bonus if they are "satisfied" with my performance, shared housing, split shifts, Saturdays...the list goes on. Honestly it seemed like a really good school, but no way was I signing that contract. It's always possible that the contract conditions won't accurately reflect the actual work environment and conditions...but I think it's a better bet to have a good contract than a bad one. |

How about this clause?
For the first three (3) months of the Employee��s Period of Employment, the Employer will collect 200,000 won per month (a total of 600,000 won). This is as a deposit for utilities, phone bills that arrive after the period of employment ends. In addition, the cost of any damaged household items belonging to the Employer, which has not been replace or repaired will be taken out of the deposit as well. The remainder of the deposit will be refunded to the Employee, up to two (2) months after the period of employment ends. If the Employee leaves or is terminated, before completing their 1-year contract (12 continuous months), the deposit will not be refunded. In this case, the Employer will have to find a replacement teacher, and these funds will be used to pay the recruiter.
I've never heard of this type of thing before. Seems pretty suspect. |

It said in my contract that I have to pay 1 million Won if I leave early (which won't happen), I can't have any dating with the staff (don't want to as I have a girlfriend), a housing depoist of 900,000 Won (which I was never asked for), I have to wear a shirt and tie (which I don't wear) and I have to evaluate all my students (which I was never asked for - thank God) were the main parts in my contract.
The funny part is that it says and I quote;
"Ensure not to sexually harass any employees, any other teachers, nor students of the Institute. Sexual harrassment at work is strictly prohibited in accordance with recent Korean law"
Recent Korean law!!!??? So it was ok maybe 5 years ago!!!??? |

But you at least wear pants right? Or is Korea even more relaxed than I thought?  |
