That sounds like heaven to me, no boorish Americans, sophisitcated Europeans and the females amongst them having their boobies on display!
What more could one ask for?
I was on the other side of the Island anyhow and toured almost every inch of it via foot and motorcross bike. Truly stunning. Too bad you spent your time at Chaweng by the sounds of it. The rest of the island is nothing like that and is very Authentic Thailand. |
It seems I didn't venture much and perhaps I'll give Koh Samui another shot. I will say, however, that I'm more into the mellow areas like Ao Nang in Krabi for relaxation, but it looks like I'll have to give other islands a try. |

Bophut in Samui is a little like that. Or you could try a really small, secluded place called Taling Ngam. Visit either of these places and you won't believe you're in the same country as Chaweng, never mind on the same island as it. |

Go to Krabi Au Nang beach. You are really close to Railey beach which in my mind is the best beach in Thailand. You can take a day tour to Phi Phi island and you are still close enough to the wild night life in Patong beach Phuket. It's worth it staying at least a few days in Patong beach becouse it has a wild night life. It's even worth it spending at least one day in Pattaya not for the beach but becouse it is quite simply the most decadent place on the planet.
I'd give Ko Samui and complete miss. The beaches are modiocre and the hotels are overpriced. |

I'm wrapping up a visit to Ko Lanta and I'll say it's been relaxing and stuff. My advice, however, is to not go here in low season (or no season, as I call it) because so many good spots close for five months between May and October.
If you want seclusion and no party scene, Ko Lanta is great in low season but I didn't expect low season to be so dead.
I recommend Southern Lanta Resort. As of April 2012, the low season rate was 1,300 baht but I prepaid for four nights and got 1,000. Low season at the resort also means I got 1) a place right by the beachfront; 2) 20 percent off food at the restaurant and 3) hardly anyone there. Free Wi-Fi (which can be sporadic but is generally OK), satellite TV (which is also sporadic) and breakfast are also included. |
