Last year, one of the 5th graders who cleaned my classroom was crying because her parents were divorcing and she had to move, after having been at my school for only one year. I took her and a couple of her friends out for a "bye bye dinner" of kalguksu at a nice place near school. The next month, when we found out she wouldn't have to move (even though her parents were still splitting), the same 3 and I had a "Horray! Stay!" pizza dinner at the local Pizza Maru.

It's situations like these that I wished I worked in a fluent environment. If I was fluent in Korean I would have cried bloody murder.

that's super nice of you. i never took the kids out, but on several occasions I bought pizza / soda for the kids.

I have ordered a pizza or two before. Always the cheapie. They didn't say thank you, but then again, they didn't complain that it wasn't a brand name pizza.

I once saw my student on the street and I bought her a chicken stick. Sometimes it's worth a few thousand won to spread some good will.
