When I worked in a school, I considered myself to be a teacher because I had taught in the States, I was teaching a subject, and my Korean students were learning.

Nope. You're a teacher if they learn something - not simply if you teach it.

You're a EFL teacher if that describes your life/career/background/education same as if you are an electrician if the same applies.

Working in a school here for a few years to pay off debts or buy a house back home with cash doesn't make anyone a teacher any more than working in a hospital for the same reason makes you a doctor.

It takes years of experience and training to make a teacher as it does a doctor. That is why they are still occasionally called "professions" Wink

You're teaching if you hold out an apple and say "This is an apple." Then ten minutes later if you ask them "what's this"? and they say "apple" then you've done what you're supposed to do.

Teaching. It ain't rocket science.

My second school would beg to differ on that one. Confused

I'm just finishing up an eye-blearing friggin' long essay on motivational constructs and their applications for the L2 classroom -- it might not be rocket science, but it can be as freakin' complex.

In the hagwon context, it's pretty freakin' difficult to be a real teacher. When the majority of us are hired based on the colour of our skin and our desirable accent, it doesn't really set the stage for professional development.

Full agreement with this.

My five year old kids? Then yes. I am a baby sitter and not a good one at that.

My elder elementary kids? Then yes. I am a teacher. Maybe not a good one, but I am a teacher and I love teaching them.

I consider myself a teacher, but I agree that it depends what class it is. I must be one of the worst kindy teachers, kids out of control, tugging my shirt..generally chaos on the average day. But elementary up and I'm in control.
As for making excuses for the working environment, that's just slack. You're put into a room with students, it shouldn't make a difference where you are: be it a university or a private school.

And what if he doesn't say apple...what will you do then...show it to him again and say apple...and again and again...

What if you had shown him a red apple the first time and a green one the second time...will he still say apple...

What if you show him a red apple and then a red ball...will he say apple or ball...

What if he refuses to take part in your demonstration...the showing of the apple and saying apple...how will you change it so as to engage his interest and encourage him to take part...

Will this little teaching model allow him to use the word apple or the concept in any meaningful way...does he know how to ask for an apple...or can get his friend to give him one...

Your method is definitely teacher centred...how would you change it to make it more learner centred...

Can you tell me the educational objective your lesson...

Do you plan to teach all vocabulary in this wonderful interesting manner...one word at a time using realia all the time...

When asked by a school to give a demonstration of your teaching approach...do you take an apple out of your bag and say....apple...wait ten minutes...and ask what is this...

What do you do for the ten minutes that you have spared for the concept to be cemented into his brain...

Teaching is not rocket science...it is more difficult...rocket science deals with a complex system designed by man which is therefore understood by those who create rockets...

Teaching deals with a complex system revolving around humans...far more complex than machines and not truly understood by anyone

Scott in HK is a real teacher. If you don't identify or at least agree in principle with that post then you would be a monkey.
