This. I completely agree.

Children and teenagers are perceptive. They can tell if a teacher doesn't like them, and if they get that impression, can you blame them for not giving a toss about a class?


I adore 99% of my students. It just isn't possible to learn all of their names. My kids know that I adore them. I don't dislike any of them (except three 6th grade girls, and I definitely know their names!).

As I said: I'm trying to learn as many names as possible, but after a hundred, it gets tough. It's even tougher with a rotating schedule. If you can remember 750 kids' names, good on you.


I can't remember all of their names. I said that I know about half of them... maybe only a third. But of those 300 or so that I know, some of them are good students, some are disruptive, some are average, and some are quiet.

Only focusing on your favourite students is a problem, and that was the point I agreed with.

Fortune had nothing to do with it. I made the list. Go get the role books and copy the photos. Seating charts aren't important either, especially if you have photos and names.

I knew my students names. Right now, I know about 200 of my 600 new students. I use my picture/name chart for keeping attendance, for keeping participation points, for managing the class. From 8:30-4:30 every day, I am reading their names and seeing their photos. I am actively working on it and the students know that.

You don't want to believe me, what do I care? You're not my student, friend, acquaintance, anything to me. You whine about not having a seating chart, not being able to learn names, but what do you do about it? Nothing, except call me names because I don't respect ignoring all but the talkative students.

You clearly didn't read the post where I said that I used the term favorites in a broad sense. I love nearly all of my students. Those that I interact with outside of the classroom on a regular basis are going to have their names learned more quickly than those who don't.

If I truly only learned my favorite students' names, I'd only know about a dozen. This is not the case.

We don't have photos in the role books, my dear--just names. I don't keep attendance. The homeroom teachers do that. Participation points are stamps that they get at the end of each class. One doesn't need a list to keep track of that when they've got their books stamped. When they earn stamps, they get prizes. This isn't my set up, but the head coteacher's.

I never said ONCE that I ignore the quiet ones. It's just harder to learn their names. I've got plenty of quiet students that I know by name. The just took longer to get to know. You've clearly got a reading comprehension problem.

I have done something about not having seating charts available. I have a cheat sheet to learn names. Is that doing nothing? I am actively working on it as well. You've had nothing positive to add to this thread. I started a lighthearted thread about how I learn their names, and you've been nasty throughout. If you don't care, then LEAVE. If you must, though, feel free to have the last word if you can't resist. Very Happy

I'm terrible at learning my students' names. Usually when they grab my phone and add themselves to my phonebook, I take a picture of them and attach it. That helps.

Plus, if a student keeps asking me, "What's my name?" I'll be more inclined to learn quickly.

Given that I see ~1,000 a week I have no intention of attempting to learn all the names. I'd be content with just knowing my before/after school class names (~40-50).

I took this to mean that you mostly focus on your favourite students. Maybe I also interpreted 'I'd rather focus on my favorites' too literally.

I did read the part about you using the word 'favourite' in a broader sense, but I'm a bit confused. Does that mean that 99% of your students are your favourites?

Really not trying to be an ass, just showing you why I reached the conclusion that you don't make the same effort to learn the names of quieter students.

Fair enough. My first post was written in a lighthearted way, and I didn't explain as clearly as I (apparently) should have. This really was supposed to be a lighthearted thread!

I adore most of my students because I happen to adore young kids. At first, the list was those who were exceptional. Now, after having learned over 100 names, it's spreading to even those who are mediocre at best. I still like the kids, and they know it. You don't have to know someone's name to let them know that they are liked.

In all fairness, only a handful of my students pronounce my name correctly, and I've told them on countless occasions. Laughing

So you are trying to tell us that you remembered the names of up to a 1000 kids you taught at anyone time? My arse you did! Laughing

You are lying - I bet you are the only teacher on this forum who will have been given a list of a 1000 kids with their photos and (Korean) names and you have gone out of your way to memorise them all. I'll let most people's outlandish claims go but you are taking the cake mate. Rolling Eyes Just to take the moral highground and prove a point on an online forum - what a loser! Laughing
