The story was spread around the world. Gotta hand it to them Republicans. One of my students said he heard this on Fox news/Sean Hannity, but I told him it wasn't fox news, only an opinion from someone who works for the fox channel. You can scroll down halfway and read the transcripts from White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs when he rebukes the 200 million per day claim...

And/or, you can watch the entire briefing...

Tom Friedman jumps on it too

Quote:
It is hard to get any more flimsy than a senior unnamed Indian official from Maharashtra talking about the cost of an Asian trip by the American president.

It was an anonymous quote, said Cooper. Some reporter in India wrote this article with this figure in it. No proof was given; no follow-up reporting was done. Now youd think if a member of Congress was going to use this figure as a fact, she would want to be pretty darn sure it was accurate, right? But there hasnt been any follow-up reporting on this Indian story. The Indian article was picked up by The Drudge Report and other sites online, and it quickly made its way into conservative talk radio.

This is more proof that no one needs to report "facts" anymore, only truthiness.

Naturally, the more you report something, the greater its truthiness is. Clearly it doesn't matter who ORIGINALLY said it was $200 million per day, because this other guy said it, and I said it, and Bill down the street said it, and hot damn Rush Limbaugh said it!

I'm looking forward to the next apocalyptic event where only rational, critical thinkers are able to survive.
