I had to put my dog to sleep earlier this year. I elected not to go to the crematoriam. A couple days later I got his ashes back with pictures of the funeral service. I was a bit much at the time but I appreciate them now.
Now I tell my neices, nephews and elementary school aged students that I've got a dead dog in a box next to my bed. They find it hilarious and horrifying alll at the same time.
Apparently at human funerals in Korea you get to watch them put your loved one in the cremator box and then you get the pleasure of pushing the button to start up the fires. This is done after you've already washed and dressed the dead. When the fires are done you get to take the bones and dump them in the grinder and then pour them into the urn. |

Must skip you right past denial and into depression.
Guess that could be helpful.
OH and that guy that said "Its. a. dog." wasn't just rude, but also oblivious to the OP's point.
In his post, the OP wasn't grieving for the dog, he'd only known the damn thing for a week. He was mostly relating a rather surreal experience. The story was in the details, like the "distinct odor" filling the room. And the witch-like adjumma caretakers.
I liked that.
You, strangely callous poster, I don't like.
I bet dogs growl when they see you. |

What I said stands.
It sucks to lose life, any life, but some much more than others.
To conflate the loss of an animal with that of a living breathing person may be poetic, but it's also a very deep disservice to the people in that persons life.
Anyway, I apologize for derailing. Sorry for you and your girlfriend's loss, and the bizarre turn of events that followed it. |

| Very interesting story OP, I'm glad I read it. Also, very funny, not about the death and all that, but really, your funeral parlor experience is pretty trippy. |

It's not a grief contest. And noone brought up the loss of a person but YOU.
My father died when I was ten. Over the summer I lost my very sweet and appreciative dog. I rarely doubt my Father was in heaven stamping his feet, holding his breath and having a temper tantrum because I was sad over the loss of my dog. |

| In addition to "bad things to eat" by poster number 3, I would stay far, far, far away from ever giving my doggy chocolate. Just a reminder, it's bad M'kay? |

| This reminded me of the Newsradio episode where they catch all the rats and think they are incinerating them, when actually they are just dropping them down the mail chute. |

My mom's dog gets into everything. He's probably 75 lbs or so and a Chocolate Lab. He found my handbag and ate a package of Reese's cups that I had in there and mom called the vet who said that although we should try not to let it happen again, it would actually take about a pound of baking chocolate to do him real damage. So don't give your dog chocolate, but don't be paranoid either.
I'm more of a cat person though. Don't even think of giving Lilies to a woman who has a cat. They are deadly! |

Ah OP, sorry to hear about your dog. I guess your experience can attest to the way different cultures approach death. Nonetheless, I read your story and was terrified. Having had a dog as a pet my whole life, I can't even begin to imagine what the whole experience must have been like.
I hope gamja made it to heaven safely... |

Even assuming they like the taste of dog meat, the dog was sick, it died of kidney failure. Would you want to eat it? |

I don't see anything weird with the situation, being in Asia the funeral is more ritualized. In the US we put animals to sleep and they get thrown in a dumpster. Granted the dead thing in question couldn't care less but one seems more dignified then the other.
Nice write up OP but you would have made a terrible viking... |
