Do not make noises with spoon or chopsticks hitting the rice bowl or other food containers.

Eat the rice and side dishes from one side.

Chew food with your closed mouth and do not make noises while chewing.

Laughing

Were you guys sitting in a row tightly to each other? And on which side of you was this 'impolite' colleague of yours?

Yes, we were sitting in a row. My boss sat on my left. The colleague was on my right at the end of the table. There was plenty of room; we weren't sqeezed in.

Hmm, I was speculating that your placing your soup bowl on the left was interpreted as passing the bowl onto the next person to your left since soup is 'supposed to be' on the right in Korea. In close proximity reversed placement causes confusion which belongs to whom. Then this 'intervention' was intended to prevent an undesirable mix-up while the food were distributed yet untouched.
Unless that were the case, the next best interpretation given enough space around the table is 'dinner table etiquette correction' which means the colleague in question knew that the bowl belonged to you and rearranged the bowl in the 'right' manner 'for you.' Even so, touching someone else's food among gown-ups once claimed (by the first bite) seems way too proactive, if not invasive, even by Korean standard.

i don't know if that was a faux paus or not but it shouldn't really matter since you're the foreign teacher.

i just wanted to say eating with korean teachers suck because they usually almost always choose a restaurant where you have to sit on the floor.

I have some of the biggest slurpees, chompies and smackers of any school I've been at. I really can't stand eating out with these people. I just want to shout, "close your damn mouth, people!" Oh well, it's only once a month.

I havnt been to Korea yet (early next yr Smile ) though I don't know if this annoys you or maybe I am brought up with a stuck up English background (my dad is a nut case when it comes to table rules) but Asians that I regularly eat with (Taiwanese and Koreans) don't shut their mouth when they eat.

So I am sure if they stopped doing that here I might pay attention to their table etiquette in Korea!

Though I can understand it is how you were brought up! I have told my friends and girl friend off for eating with their mouth open and they obey! Though to them I sound like a nut case with strange rules I guess!

Everybody here makes noise when they eat soup. It's actually quite a mark of refinement to not slurp soup, I think, because it's so much more intuitive to slurp it... it makes more sense. Many Canadians slurp their soup, too. I don't slurp. It's my single refinement... the single one, mind.

That's like eating at the school cafeteria and one day there's noodles so you pass on the rice to avoid too many starches and the servers and teachers and kids will look like you just wipe your boo-tay with ol' taegukki.

Oh, and never tell them that white rice isn't that nutritional.

one of the advantages of not eating rice and not eating their soup (usually fishy, etc) is not having to worry at all about these supposed social faux pas.

(what's the plural of faux pas, btw?)

bah, I've told them many times white rice isn't nutritional Very Happy

(usually in response to questions, why no rice?)

Is that so odd? Chewing with one's mouth open is one of the most irritating things in the world.

Well, when I said never tell them that about rice, I was being a bit sarastic.
The best was when I explained to a teacher "White rice is a simple sugar, no nutrition."
Teacher: "No, this rice no put sugar. Very healthy."
