These cables are revealing how embarrassingly little the U.S., South Korea, AND China, really know about North Korea.

Has WikiLeaks been under a DoS attack for a few days? It hasn't been working since last week.

The biggest reason I hate wikileaks is that comments like this are basically meaningless... sort of like tabloid gossip. Only actions matter.

On the other hand, the thought of a reunified Korea is actually pretty terrifying...

That won't happen. Even Hong kong cars aren't allowed into China without purchasing a very expensive plate.

Such wishful thinking Laughing Laughing Laughing

Reunification within 5 years ? China 'giving up' on North Korea? Wow. Optimists.

China will always be directly opposed to USA, Japan and South Korea in any arena. They have always been natural competitors ...and threats.

China will always be the big, bad evil in the East. North Korea is just making China look good, but.... who pulls the strings? Who saved the regime from being wiped out? Who made the demarcation line? Who spilled so much blood just to keep a buffer zone ???

China is in it deep, and wont let go of their puppet state without a fight.

They will as soon as the puppet state ceases to be a net benefit to them, which it has.

While they might get some resources from them, north korea is holding them back and damaging their reputation globally. For a country, like china, who is trying to establish themselves as a global power, that's not a good black mark to have.
They have enough other bad press to deal with. They don't need another country screwing them every time they breathe.

you wouldn't even know about this much less able to discuss this topic if wikileaks didn't leak the story. Perhaps you should be grateful toward them?

For all we know, this revelation could have unintended consequences such as making the Chinese more reluctant to have discussions with US officials. So, no, I see no reason to be grateful.

China has international bus and train routes (yes you need to change gauge or whatever).

So yeah, if something doesn't happen, then no one is going to talk about it... they'll talk about something else instead. Thanks for that.

I suppose that if the world becomes a better place because of these leaks, then maybe I'll say 'wow, wikileaks was right!' and show gratitude... but right now, I think it's a little early for gratitude.

The report is pretty biased. Remember that it was a Chinese diplomat sweet talking to a U.S. diplomat and probably in a way to maneuver for leverage. Contrary to popular belief, diplomats don't always give accurate assessments of their own country to other countries, but instead say what advances their nation's interests.

Besides, if China was ok with Korean reunification, it wouldn't be siding 100% with North Korea currently. Their request for an "emergency return to 6-party talks" translates to "ok, everyone just calm down and give North Korea whatever they want". What's worse is that they publicly urged 6-party talks AFTER Seoul had privately told them it was out of the question. The move was specifically to make Seoul look bad and to encourage the North.

They are not siding 100%. Explain how they approved sanctions against the North. Their relationship has always been strained. Their primary interest in North Korea is financial. However, they also have financial interests in South Korea and the US.

Can happen.

NK shares a border with Russia. They already have a rail connection to Moscow/Vladivostok
