Give the youtube guy a break -- he is advertising himself. I expect ads to be full of BS and spurious claims...and his ad is no exception. The type of place that would be impressed by his claims is exactly the type of place he deserves to work...the type of place that can see his claims for the BS they are will not hire him...so he is helping to limit himself to where he will do well. Good for him!
Just as an example...if he had applied to our school, his little video would have had his application tossed...which would have saved the school the cost of a phone interview...and we should all be grateful for the time, effort, and money that little shortcut saved us...not to mention the problems avoided by not having that guy work here....
Again -- good for him! He is helping to streamline the process for everyone involved! |

What makes you so sure? A guy still at uni on another thread got offered a job at SNU and he hasn't even made a video. |

Well, for starters, I have some say in who gets hired, and a fellow like that (claiming to have invented the wheel, the internet, fire, and religion) would get laughed at during the candidate discussion, then dismissed...that is, assuming he even MADE it to the discussion, and wasn't cut in the first or second round. I kinda think my boss WOULD mention him, just for the entertainment value...like the lady that included a photo in a swimsuit, or the guy with a photo showing him clearly drunk, beer in hand...you know, the train-wreck applicants..... |

| The haircut made me laugh. It looks okay on a Korean 16 year old, but kinda seems like something he would abandon before college. |

I disagree with the OP. I have a masters in Applied Linguistics and I didn't think he was plaigarising anything. The video was an introduction to his series of videos which will include his ideas. The lesson structure he identified is so well known it can hardly be attributed to anyone particular. I also refer to it as "they way I was taught" to teach. He didn't introduce it at all but simply said it was the way he teaches.

liveinkorea316: You need to watch it again. He is clearing claiming the ideas as his own in a very unambiguous manner.
Again, probably not intended for the likes of you or anyone else fairly well-informed. There are a lot of people out there hiring for the "look" of things rather than the content, and it has a bearing on people like you who may actually be putting in some serious effort.
Protect him if you want, it's not the person, it's the principle. He refers to himself as a "professor" on another site. |

| nah, not that guy, he's (the one you're refering to) apparently still in the states and started that thread to see if he realistically could land a job at snu (and never referred to himself as a professor, but did tell us straight up that he wasn't sure if he would be considered qualified enough). |

| I completely agree that he's full of BS, but it's clear that the video was made for job applications. The average hogwon manager probably knows little about ELT methodology, so they'll probably believe him. Whether they'll care or not is another story. Personally, I would have made something more fun and exciting. Even if he had to pay a bunch of kids to look happy and enjoying their lessonS, it would probably get him more job offers than this video. On the plus side, it DOES at least show that he's taken an ELT course or gone to the trouble to reading through an intro to ELT textbook. I know quite a few teachers here who have no training at all - neither formal nor self-taught. |

| Guess again- he got hired by a uni. This is why he refers to himself as a "Professor", and also indicates how hiring practices may shift further to favor the 'image' factor even more than it is now. |

Where on there does it say he got hired by a university? All it says is that he works for SMOE. |

Ok, I NEVER rant on others posts but a lot of people's responses on here with the exception of liveinkorea316's and 1 or 2 more are just plain retarded, and it makes me ashamed that you call yourself English teachers. If you cannot make a couple of very obvious inferences from what was spoken by the guy on youtube, then you obviously don't understand English enough to be able to teach it!
First, I agree he does look a little dorkish and the video is definately cheezy, but this is not the topic of debate
He says at the beginning, "I wanted to share my teaching ideas and strategies I've developed over the years....."
THEN he says, "This is my first video......"
THEN he says, "I want to START off by diagramming MY basic classroom strategies..."
They ARE his basic classroom strategies. They should be all of ours.
He is obviously making an introduction video. He told you that in the beginning. He then goes on to talk about the basics of esl AFTER saying they are his basic classroom strategy. Never once did he claim to have developed the basic classroom strategies. He will share those strategies he developed in further videos yet to come.
Listen and understand before you criticize. Hopefully it won't make you sound as dumb. |

War Eagle-
I think you are the one who should be ashamed to be an English teacher. In any case you definitely need to take (or re-take) a course in Linguistics, and basic logic.

If this isn't a clear case of someone claiming to have developed something, I don't know what is.

None of his "future" videos contain anything original, all of the ideas and strategies that "he developed" are things I learned working at a language school. Yet he is clearly taking ownership of them.
And yes, to claim on one's LinkedIn site http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=70163941&authType=name&authToken=Ay7I&trk=pbmap that one is a "Professor" (the guy doesn't even have an MA) is a bit much, and indicates that he will not hesitate to make false claims for personal gain. |
