It is terrible for the teeth, though, so make sure to brush or at least chew some sugarless gum and drink some water after you finish. It's not a long-time-sipping drink either. Drink it and rinse those teeth.
I've mentioned this before, but meth mouth and mountain dew mouth are very similar (and often found in the same people).
Did you ever do the baby tooth in a cup of cola experiment? Creepy! |
Why? Carbonic acid in sodas, citric acid in fruit juice, any acid/base we eat will do that. The key is no one ever soaks their teeth in cola for weeks at a time. Try the same thing with healthy orange juice or a lemon and you'll get the same result - an acid etched tooth. |

Yup. Sugar is not the thing that will cause tooth decay and cavities when you drink coke. Coke has a pH of around 2.8-3.4 which is highly acidic. That is what causes teeth and bones to dissolve.
Coke is brilliant, it has so many uses. It's sometimes used to remove blood after car accidents. You can clean your toilet with coke, use it to remove greasy stains from clothes. You can even use it to clean your car engine. |

A can of Coke (in North America) has up to 12 teaspoons of sugar. Diet drinks don't but studies have pointed to a possible link to cancer and other diseases.
Coke is good occasionally but not every day. |

Yes, Coke is bad for you. The amount of sugar (from either refined white sugar or corn syrup) and pH levels make it unhealthy. The OP seems to be rather healthy otherwise, so an occasional cola here and there wont be too bad for him unless he's drinking it in really high quantities.

The original recipe of Coca Cola syrup was made to cancel out the negative effects that the cocaine caused to the stomach, so, nowadays, if you have a stomachache, the stuff is actually pretty soothing. I always keep a can in the fridge in case I get a stomachache, but usually my can stays there for a long time before I need it.
My grandma told me that her mom used to have a bottle of the concentrated syrup that she'd mix up with water whenever the kids had tummyaches.

Reminds me of the classic DIY Canadian cure for stomach aches used around the country - a glass of flat ginger ale. |

Did you not read the OP's post? "I will admit, I am a heavy drinker" |

Apparently brushing your teeth after drinking acidic drinks is doing more harm than good. The acid softens the teeth which makes brushing damage the teeth much more than usually. I always wonder if this is why my teeth are much healtier than my Korean lab mate's teeth even though they brush their teeth 3 times a day and I brush mine once a day.
The first source I could find which supports it:
Toothbrush Abrasion of Erosively Altered Enamel after Intraoral Exposure to Saliva: An in situ Study, Caries research Vol. 33, No. 6, 1999

What else would I mix my rum with?
Besides, Coca-cola has be around a long time with lots of people drinking lots of it without apparent ill effect. (This is not to say there aren't plenty of indirect health problems contributed to by high sodium and sugar consumption.). Compare that to A LOT of so-called healthier processed foods and so-called health drinks which tinker with the body in ways that may become obvious only after a few more decades of use. I am very sceptical about the longterm effects of everything from microwave ovens (only be around three decades) to vitamin suppliments (skyrocketed pill use in the last couple of decades) to teflon (chemical leeching) to diet drinks (I was wary of aspartame from day one!). |

I often wonder if my Korean coworkers are actually doing their teeth harm by brushing them three to five times a day.
Furthermore they all gag themselves on their toothbrushes and spit their phelgm into the same sink. Combine this with the fact that Koreans don't take sick days, and I really started to wonder if this could spread illnesses.
I got tonsilitis in Korea and I had never had it before in my life. And I basically got a sinus infection once every two months or so while I was there. I partly blame the cold, dry winter climate and partly blame Korean sanitation habits. |

Funny Carbonated sugar drinks are my only vice these days, too. I'm not stressing myself out about it, but if after a hard day I *need* a bottle of Chilsung, well... that's ok.
It is a little funny being a 30+ adult who *really* likes soft drinks. |

Very true. You have to rinse with water and wait. That's why I keep sugarless gum at my desk for after lunch. I brush about a half hour later. |
