I remember when I first arrived in Korea - walking down broken pavements in the wrong side of Pohang city - and thinking: "Heck, I've landed in China."
Everywhere I looked, Oriental-looking people were scuttling along on bikes, wearing long trench-like padded coats, bowing and looking blank faced. And get this: they were all dressed the same, had the same haircuts, and were eating noodles with chopsticks, studying till midnight, and beating students who failed memory tests.
I was disappointed. I thought I'd come to Korea. |

Around where I'm from in the US, a 'paki' refers to a 'package store', not a pakistani. |

Definitely not Canadian. I'm from Toronto and I'd never say Paki. I think it's still considered pretty offensive by a lot of people. |

The only time i've heard it used was in Canada. I was in Kelowna, BC and some friends started using that term and i though it was a little offensive. |

ok, says here it's offensive in canada and the UK. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Paki
I don't think it is in America, though. But then again, Pakistanis aren't quite the largish minority as they are in the UK - where "Oriental" isn't considered offensive probably for the same reason. |

When I was in high school I was talking to a girl from Pakistan and I used the word Paki. I thought that was proper given Bengali, rather than Bengladeshi is the proper term. It wasn't until 6 months later that I heard the term was racist.
But she seemed not to even notice. I mean we lived in such a liberal multicultural city that people were used to getting called various things on accident simply because with 190 country's worth of children its pretty hard to keep things straight. Plus we were all talking about where we were from and stuff so its not like anyone was even thinking about being offensive. |

It is a type of urban slang that is used a lot in the northeastern US and the mid-Atantic states.
Most of you Americans on this board, being middle-class suburban people, I am not surprised you guys haven't heard of it. |

It's pretty offensive in Western Canada. In rural Alberta it's used quite a bit in the offensive kind of way. However, if some white guy called some big South Asian guy 'paki', he'd better have muscle to back up the insult. |

Since we're throwing out assumptions... Sorry no one's heard of your very region specific 1980s young urban lower-class white male slang. |
