Hey,
i read on seat61.com that a train connects malaysia, thailand, laos, and vietnam. Does anyone have info on/exp. with this train system? like timetable (how long does it take to get from eg kuala lumpur to chiang mai or laos), prices, friendliness (ie should i bring a metal vest to avoid stab wounds?) etc.
debating training it or flying during my break, using kuala lumpur as an entry point |
Coming through the southern 3 provinces in Thailand is not the best idea.
The (Muslim) rebels have a habit of trying to shoot or blow things up (including foreigners).
Better to fly the local short hops. Domestic and short haul international fights down here are CHEAP.

The train that goes to Butterworth/Goergetown, Malaysia via Hat Yai is safe, just don't go the other less used train route that goes thru Yala, Thailand into Malaysia. |

| I took a series of buses and taxis to get to the border of Malaysia/ Thailand from Butterworth. All the minibuses were sold out thats why we took this route. From the Thai side of the border, caught a local commuter bus to Hat Yai. Bought an overnight train ticket (1st class sleeper) to Bangkok. Went to a Spa in Hat Yai and ate some food before getting on the train. No problems and it was business as usual in the city. The overnight train was sweet with the private bunk but if you are doing it to save money, it is about the same price as a ticket with air asia. |

thanks for the overwhelming replies, all!
ok, so the main factor is time and money. So here's the sit:
-If things go as planned currently, I'll get into Thailand from Vientiane through the Friendship bridge and use the bus/train system to travel within Thailand for roughly 2 weeks.
-I'll have to make my way back to Kuala Lumpur in order to fly out at the end of the trip.
Basically, I'm wondering how long the trains take to travel (ie from Bangkok [or a more southern point in Thailand] to Kuala Lumpur). Also, how much would it cost (ie would flying back to Kuala Lumpur be cheaper/similarly priced?)
I've tried looking at the Thai train website, but it is a bit daunting....eep!
Also, how much do the trains and buses run within the country?
Ideally, I'd like to take the train southward, hop off at a stop for a bit, then leave and progress farther down until I'm back in Kuala Lumpur. (Is this doable and worthwhile?)
Thanks again! |

My minibus driver from Hat Yai to Krabi carried a 2 foot sword. |
