Trog, Jr., TT,

I know that must've seemed extreme to refer to people having died.... looking at my post on the board I now think it's a bit funny and please let me add that I fully understand this is not Utah or Omaha beach. I did not intend a comparison, as that would be deeply disrespectful of those who have died.... and I do have a sense of proportion to my situation. I'll be having a beer and laughing about this all some day soon.. That being said, please keep in mind that the spirit of freedom is the same no matter the circumstance. It bothers me that others have worried about it when they should not have. If you worry, you are not free, if you lose sleep, you have lost peace of mind. I take this very seriously and feel that if they stop me for having broken a contract they discarded and urinated on since day [Mod Edit] one, it is war and I'm all in. It bothers me to even think someone else thinks they have that power over me or anyone else in my boots. I'm an easy going friendly guy and I'll be your best friend and best worker, but if you treat me like [Mod Edit], we will part ways.

I understand your reasons for leaving, whatever they may be, but after your last post quoting Jason Bourne, are you just running scared or is the war really 'on'?

Not knowing the particulars of your situation since you wont share them past saying you havent done anything criminal, are you at least reporting your employer to the labor board, tax office and health insurance office? Those are the standard violations that can be dealt with. Or are you just running and letting the next teacher go through exactly the same as you - or worse since your employer will be pissed that you ran and carry that to the next teacher?

Posting on a blacklist or dave's after you leave is next to nothing when you consider not many people read them or listen to them since they think "it wont happen to me". Report the employer to the authorities and let them deal with the penalties and maybe they will learn a lesson. Dont let the next teacher go through the same as you because you ran and did nothing about it.

I have no problem with running. It's warranted in many cases, but running and not looking back is weak and hurts the people behind and/or after you.

Dude, I didn't think your comment was extreme. I think being mistreated (harassment from crap employer) and maligned (threat of trumped up criminal charges) in a foreign country that functions on an Us Versus Them (Koreans = Us / Foreigners = Them) basis in a legal/social system that works quite differently to what you're familiar with is exceptionally stressful. If you verbalize your stress that is your right. Say what you need to say and do what you need to do.

There is no judgment here.

Take care HC and drop us a line when you get home.

First,

Thanks to the moderators and my apologies to all. I've not been myself and it's showing. The words seemed appropriate, but not in someone else's house ..... anyway,

OO,

Running scared?..... I will have the same pounding heart as the thousands before me as I pass through Immigration. There's a difference between backing down from a fight and simply picking your battles. If it's fight or flight, and I have wings, why bother?

If I chose to stay and fight, would it change them for the better? Maybe, but more often than not, an asshole is an asshole and will not change.

Do I care about my replacement? Absolutely, yes.

Will I post on every forum and raise a flags all over the place? Yes, immediately after I am gone.

I am not the person you may think or want to paint a picture of, based on your post, which seems to me a bit disrespectful. You do not know the details......

You can run AND report. I'm just saying if you run without reporting, it's pretty weak. I hope you report them before/after you run. There is no excuse for just running and not considering the people after you or left behind.

Forgot to say.... I will report them after I jet.
I thought that just goes without saying..... It costs me nothing, and can only purchase a better, not worse, situation for the next suc... err employee. You have to create a record, I fully agree. How else would the overall situation improve?

Thanks. I know of too many people who have just run and then I had to listen to the same problems again from the people who replaced them. Hope you have a safe trip.

Theresa,

Thank you for your input. I have some advice from someone with a lot of experience in this and the message is to not worry if you have done nothing wrong. I have to be in country for 4 days after leaving the school; I will stand and fight a [Mod Edit] charge. I've done nothing wrong. The law is on my side. I am free, and that is something others have died for. It bugs me that I even worry about this [Mod Edit], that it occupies my time.
For them to accuse me of a crime punishable with jail represents a risk to them as well. The bar for civil matters is 50million won. I don't have any parking tickets, unpaid taxes, etc..... that is what they stop you for, not some [Mod Edit] contract. Noone could go anywhere if people had that power over each other.

Dude I've pulled runners more than once - don't worry. My first runner was a heartstopping experience for me. I was sure they (btw this was back in the 90s) were gonna jump out at me at any moment from either the bushes, one of the kiosks in the airport check-in area, etc. Going through immi I was so scared that when they asked me if I was coming back I said yes just to avoid tipping anyone off. Once I got through immi I waited 2 hours for my flight during which time I worried that the school would show up at any moment and get immi to arrest me. None of this happened. The worry was needless.

The other few runners were in the 2000s and there were no issues at all. When immi asked if I was coming back I said no.

If your employer treats you badly, leave. In my experience, ineffectual Koreans like to make threats (like the slag at my last hagwon). Koreans with actual power don't need to tell you what they can or cannot do. They already know. And even then my position is: so what? you're not god.

If an employer threatens you - leave. Especially if they try to threaten you with the possibility of trumped up criminal charges.

Having said all of that it's always best to take precautions.

If it were me and I needed to be in country for an additional four days before my flight, I would work most of those days to keep things moving. I'd work 3, take a siccie on the 4th, run on the 5th. Any reason you can't do that?

how many runners have you done? Shocked
