A southern Sudan state may take off better than South Africa did last century. It may start an industrial revolution in Africa, or it may go the way of other controlled states annexed by larger economies, bullied by bigger Unions and economic alliances. |
How the heck would a southern Sudan state take off? Why would it start an industrial revolution?? Am I missing something here?? Southern Sudan is a complete dump. Have you ever been there? A friend of mine used to work there and just came back from working in Haiti. Which was worse? Sudan! Even (parts of) Somalia have better infrastructure and more stability than southern Sudan. |

Sounds as good as South 'lol'frica. I always imagined that Korea added them into the number of native speaking countries because they wanted some practice with some refugees. |

Development.
Magnitogorsk in Russia was a vast wasteland, until they found precoius minerals and developed it. I think that city was called Tankograd in the cold war era.
South Africa was more akin to the Carribean in beauty, with no development, until they found precious minerals...then they developed the region.
What was the city of Shenzhen or Hong Kong, or even Singapore before the developed these places ? Dumps, sprawling ghettos and prostitution hovels with fishing villages attached.
Do you know how cities and economies grow? South Sudan can be one of these places, if its protected, and not just from the North. |

Travel Zen, you know what all those places had?? GOOD GOVERNMENT. Well minus Russia, but at least it is pretty homogenous. South Sudan? It has neither.
Come on, let's stay on planet reality ok?
And you didn't answer my question: what in Southern Sudan makes you think it could develop? Oil? Well then I give you pretty much every oil producing country in Africa as an example of how oil can be more of a hinderance than help for development. |

Wishful thinking ?
IF and maybe a big IF, South Sudan could 'come up' and step up with help then anything is possible.
Wishful thinking? USA was supposed to fail. Mob rule you know. They said that and it didn't happen.
Soviet Russia? They said impossible. It collapsed 90 years later, after being a Super Power.
Planet Earth? We were supposed to nuke each other to dust in the 60's - 80's.
Granted, chances are that it'll turn into the other countries, dominated and told by Europe, diddled by the US. Dysfunctional by decree. Or it may be a bulwark against Islamist states, an aircraft carrier in an ocean of fundamentalists. |

I don't think that the people of the South feel they are better off economically, socially, or politically with the North. I do not like the idea of having to divide the country, but the North has been rather oppressive under the hegemonic rule of Omar Bashir. I am not sure what they have to lose. The US might gain from a new country emerging in the South.
It would help the US gain a presence near the Red Sea, at least economically. |

yes, it is the west that keeps them down! That's it! So basically you're saying you made that statement based on nothing whatsoever. Got it. |

| probably end up in tragedy but lets hope. They believe that they can pull it off. China just a few decades ago was a disaster a police state where the average income was about $ 3.00 dollars a month. They had been basically raped by European powers. Made into slaves actually. South Sudan has some resources and I really hope they can pull this off. |

Dude, just read anything on Africa. The games are still going strong.
Its not just Africa. Europe tried to corner markets and cut off oil to Japan just for kicks. China too, games and more games. Empire and Colonialism.
Not blaming them though, when you're on top, you wanna stay that way. Machiavelli. |
