but I literally feel like a retard trying to figure this out.
(Diploma apostille I got...FBI CBC...no idea)

Mail your FBI cbc to DC with a self addressed stamped envelope enclosed. (Three .44 cent stamps will more than cover the mailing & return)

Print off & fill out this page-include it with your FBI cbc along with payment:
http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/63001.pdf

Wait 4-6 weeks for it to return.

that's to get it apostilled? or authenticated? Because I assumed that it would already come authenticated. (with a stamp and seal and all that jazz...)

Interesting answer from the secretary of state for anyone living in Wisconsin. I called in and they told me that authentication or not, they will apostille a federal background check. They also told me not to have it notarized if there is no authentication and that they will take care of everything. Sounds too good to be true...

We are coming from WI in a few months. Did you have any problems getting a copy of your degree apostilled?

Before you do anything, check if your SOS will apostillize it by calling their office. If they do, it usually doesn't matter if the FBI authenticated it or not. If your SOS won't apostillize, you'll have to send it back to the FBI.

I haven't graduated yet. There's a program at the UW that works with GEPIK in getting soon-to-be graduates applied without actually having the degree yet. GEPIK apparently agrees to this because of the good history of UW graduates in their schools. I'm not really sure how the degree matter will be handled, though.

To be honest, the SOS in Madison seems really helpful and knowledgeable, so try giving them a call.

I know there's a thread about states that apostille FBI checks.
I emailed the TExas SOS and they said that they don't apostille federal documents and that I had to get that done at the federal level.
My question now is...does the FBI headquarters authenticate AND apostille? or is that asking for too much?
I looked on the FBI website and it said nothing about apostilles...
anybody know.
(time is money here because I'm leaving my pets in South Korea while I go home to take care of all these things...)

If you need it on an expedited basis, you can use apostille service such as Apostille Pros www.apostillepros.com

They apostille for you. 1-2 business day.

Fadedgirl you're making it harder than it should be. The US Dept of State- The office of Authentications will do it. Like I wrote above...

On a side note I love the number of Wisconsinites on this thread... I'm tempted to take cow erasers as hand outs to the kiddies Rolling Eyes

Perhaps my experience may help as I just finished this process a couple weeks ago. I live in Virginia by the way.

I received my CBC with a seal on it though I have no idea if it was authenticated or whatever. I didn't request any sort of authentication. After receiving my CBC I copied it and got that copy notarized. Then, I sent BOTH the original and the copy to the Secretary of the Commonwealth Authentication Department. They then apostilled the copy (Though they were supposed to apostille both. I called back and they were just like "Oops...") and sent both back to me. I used that copy when I applied for a VISA.

So, for you, I see no reason why you should need to take it to Washington DC. If you can go to the Authentication Department of your state government I see no reason why you couldn't just walk in and have them seal it. If you're concerned about the authentication, you should be able to get a copy notarized and use that.

Please, if I'm incorrect with any of this, someone correct me.

I am going to ask the most noobish quesiton ever.

I just got my envelope back from the FBI. I'm supposed to open it before I get it apostilled, right? Because there's no point in sending out the envelope unopened, and say, they didn't actually process my request, but my fingerprints were rejected, or something. Just to make sure the request was actually done.

I'd rather be safe than sorry. It only took four and a half weeks to come, though, so that's awesome.
