I'm sure I will be quickly corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe that is strictly the standard in public schools.

Yeah, that's only in public schools.

Legal limit is 40 hours per week.

Limit to number of classes and length of classes? I have no idea. Probably just depends what you signed for in the contract.

The reality is this:

There are very few jobs left in Korea now.
Those few that remain are (surprise surprise), less than attractive positions.
Nationwide, esl employers have noticed the change and are taking advantage. This means many jobs now only offer substandard conditions.
Even (gasp) blonde females have begun to complain about a lack of options.
Thats how bad it is.

The guys out there claiming they wouldn't work for less than "5M a month and 6 months paid vacation" etc are talking smack. They're just lucky that they got in before the lock. If they all got fired now, most of them wouldn't be able to find another job at all. But then again they probably have mummies and daddies to help them out of trouble at every turn. Thats not the case for everyone.

To the OP: just do what you have to do. Not everyone's circumstances are the same.

anyways, back to the point, after what number of classes is overtime?

I heard that the legal limit is 40 hours a week.
But surely this must not be all actual class time?

Yesterday alone there were 20 postings on Dave's Korean Job Board, and when you consider that most postings each advertise a number positions, I wouldn't consider that to be very few. The number of jobs and the working conditions have certainly decreased, but to paint a picture of a market that's all but dried up isn't accurate either.

I got my current job 6 months ago, and it was the first and only job that I applied for. I have only 1.5 years of teaching experience, and the OP seems to indicate that he has at least a year of experience.

I'm not saying he's not going to have to settle for a job that's much crappier than he was hoping for. The question is to which extreme he should be willing to settle. To recommend someone that they take a job that requires 40 hours of teaching a week for 2.3 million is not something I would do to my worst enemy. For an experience teacher especially, there are better jobs out there.

You can make $12/hr anywhere back home.

Really? You're saying there are loads of jobs in the US? You just have to leave your front door and you get a $12 per hour job?

That's exactly what I'm saying. In Toronto minimum wage is already $10/hr. When I went back for a bit in 2009/2010 I easily found jobs making that much. I was working two jobs, making $25/hr at one and $15/hr at another. But not enough hours and rent and everything was just too damn high. Couldn't save a dime.

Okay this job says 40 40-50 min. classes per week (so 160 40-50 min. classes per month).

BAIL!!!!!!!!

Those hours are RIDICULOUS for that salary.

Don't be put off by other posters who say that it is hard to get a job here at the moment. There are still hundreds of vacancies. You just need to be flexible and package yourself well.

Hold out until you find a better offer.

If that really is the best offer you can get - and I doubt it - consider other countries first.

I'll be honest... I've probably turned down over 10 offers in the 4 weeks I've been interviewing. All have been bad jobs (reasons being no air fare, lowballing salary, no pension, bad reputation, insane hours, bad overtime, etc.)

But I'm not rushing back to Korea any time soon. I got really lucky with my first contract so I know there are good jobs out there. I'm just going to be optimistic, no rush into a bad contract, and I'm sure something good will come up. I only need one job, one good one will come.

I searched four months for a good academy job and found nothing. Some job offers started out good, but once you started probing for questions you found out the true nature of your employer.

I've gotten more job offers from China in a few weeks of intense interviews than I did in 4 months of interviewing for Korea. Then again, I was pretty picky with my school of choice and had less frequent interviews.

Unless you get a public school position or strike gold with a kickass hagwon position, I wouldn't go back to SK. They're asking teachers to do a lot for less money than in the past and the labor conditions seem to get worse rather than better across the board for hagwons. The employers are exploiting the desperation for fresh off the boat grads by lowering their salary, increasing their hours and creating a poor labor environment for their employees. It shows that people are willing or ignorant enough to take this BS. Otherwise, it would have stopped a while ago.
