At forst I was going to go with http://www.explorenorthkorea.com/the-signature-tour---4-days-from-dandong.html because I like trains, and I've always wanted to check out Dandong, but then a friend of mine who lives in HK wanted to join me, and with limited time-off would prefer to fly in and out of Beijing, which is understandable, so we'll probably go with Koryo Tours due to their good reputation.
On a side note, I just tried to go to the Koryo Tours website which is now blocked! I checked it out last week so it must be recent - very annoying and I hope it doesn't prevent me from booking. |
i was looking at both koryo and lupine travel (http://www.lupinetravel.co.uk/) for a trip. i can't believe the koryo website is blocked now! that sucks any way to get around it? |

Hey, I might be down for that trip. My contract will be finished mid-June and I am planning an across Asia trip. I've thought about going to NK.
Have you checked out Young Pioneer Tours? They seem pretty cheap too
http://dprk.youngpioneertours.com/
I'll let you know as we get closer to the date. |

Yes let me know. I'm gonna be PMing you guys in a month or so when I'm getting ready to book the flight and tour, haha.
http://dprk.youngpioneertours.com/ definitely seems cheap, but they are just getting up and running, and they say on their site "We are a couple of friends, who have been living in China for the past four years. Weve visited the DPRK a few times, and have really enjoyed the experience. As ex-pat teachers living in China, we were on a budget ..."
So I'm a bit weary. Koryogroup.com looked great, but yeah now it's blocked, wth?? |

I'm looking to finally make it to North Korea as well and this seems the time to go. I've done the DMZ before so this would take the cake easily.
I wonder how much swine flu and tuberculosis they have going up there. Start making sure your immunizations are up to date, that's for sure.
I'll have to check with my MOE to see what our vacation periods are.
What are the exact dates of the mass games and the tours? |

I tried through the one in Dandong last summer and we ended up not being able to get a visa through them. We ended up being referred to a company in Shenyang. It cost 4635 Chinese Yuan plus 100 Euros to get a mass games ticket. It was well worth it. It was the surreal thing I have ever experienced. We referred to them through these guys [email protected] in Dandong who are also quite cheap. |

So if Koryo is gone then is Dandong the only way for foreigners to get through to the DPRK legally? |

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I would imagine there are other tour groups that leave via plane from Beijing. US citizens are not allowed to enter North Korea via train.
I was reading on one of the tour websites that it is possible to fly into Pyeongyang from Beijing and have a guide from your tour company escort you to meet up with the rest of the group.
What the frick is going on with the koryo website being blocked? I may have to find their email adress or have a friend back in the states look up info for me. |

No, there are many agencies which organise trips to the North, Koryo just has the best reputation and the slickest website. Not sure if it's true, but I've even read that it doesn't matter who you go through, you get the same guides/meals/accommodation once you're actually over there. |

This is true. The different tour groups organize the flights to Pyeongyang and help with visas, etc. Once you arrive in North Korea your tour is the same as all the other tour company groups....it is all planned out and scheduled by the North Korean tourism agency. Same hotels, same meals, same sights, same everything. |

Eh, tourism isn't really going to make or break the regime, and I don't think it's a bad thing for people to see the ridiculousness of the regime firsthand. |
