I've tried a most of the browser integrated solutions, but recently and more or less by accident I've discovered that my favorite download manager, jDownloader (a Java based program), does YouTube too!
Leave it running in the background and make sure (I think this is on by default) that clipboard monitoring is on. Then just "copy" the web address of your YouTube video right from the page.
After a few seconds of decoding the available links, it will offer you ANY resolution available for the video, including sound only (as MP3) and .flv or .mp4 (if available).
Not much acceleration is available (the videos download with a couple hundred kbps only) but you can download multiple videos at the same time.
So far it works like a charm. I'm using it to download massive files (PC Longplays and Speedruns which are 100's of MB to several GB in size). Apart from that, jDownloader is the only download manager I've found that can handle ALL filehosting services, and its browser independent.

I've been using it for 3-4 years now and the developers manage frequent updates to ensure compatibility with existing hosting services. If you have "subscriptions" to one or more file hosters, you'll find this even more useful. |
