| But, since the school is out the money either way, and since, abstract and philosophical as it may be, it seems "fair" that teachers leaving or staying should be treated the same, and since this is an anticipated expense that really costs the school nothing more than what they expected and the teacher has earned it just as much as those teachers who are leaving, it seems to me, morally, that the school should pay cash to the teacher. |
I guess I like medical analogies. This anticipated expense is no different than going on a camping trip and buying a first aid kit. It's there to use, if needed. That's the extent either party can anticipate using it. Otherwise, it's not a mandatory expense. If the school has problems with its plumbing, they also have to pay for that. However, at the end of the year, if there were no plumbing problems then the teacher doesn't get money that could have been used for some imaginary problem.
We write the airfare condition to clarify if there is a need for a flight home, then the school pays for it. If the school needs plumbing though, it's 100% on them regardless.
If you are going to enter into an agreement where you feel you are entitled to flight money regardless if you use it or not for a flight, it would make more sense to negotiate a higher salary. This way you are getting some of that money each month instead of trying to fight for 100% of it at the end of the year. |

| What about when you're getting a new job in Korea, but you want to visit your home country for a couple weeks between contracts? My current school still has to pay my airfare home, right? My school will know I'm getting another job in Korea because I'll need references. I have a GEPIK contract, btw. |
I'm interested in this too. Can I leave the country for a few weeks - but not hand in my ARC - and come back to my new job without having to go through the whole immi. process again? |

I JUST went through this situation with my public school. I argued to the death but they wouldn't give me the ticket or cash because I wasn't leaving within 10 days. Check your contract.
Had I know they were going to be so stickler about it, I would have gone home this vacation just to use the ticket instead of heading to the Philippines. Sucks. |
