I think they're pathetic! Why would I put an E-mart carrier bag full of rubbish into another plastic bag? I do use them though because I don't want to give Westerners a bad name. |

| I can't believe that some of you gloat that you can get away with throwing out your trash in any old bag. Not something to be proud of I would think. Get some responsibility in your life. Some of you probably moan how dirty Korea is, yet are glad to add to the problem. Dirty foreign muppets! Aiiii go! |

Maybe you can explain to us how it has a different effect on the environment if a sealed E-mart bag is used instead of a sealed regulation rubbish bag? Taxes which finance the municipal garbage company could be collected in much better ways. |

| What could be more effective than money out of your pocket every time you put trash out for pickup? I'm sure thats just part of the cost but I think its a great way to drive home that the cost of processing garbage is real & considerable. |

Many people make sure they recycle all they can, and compost dispose all they can, because the garbage bags are "expensive".
Sounds good to me. |

| Now if we only could do away with those plastic bags that the stores give you(or sell for 20 won). You can't use them for garbage...... |
Easy to do away with...bring your own bags. Bring cloth and you can't use them for garbage, either. |

What better ways? I think this is about perfect. You pay tax equivalent to how much garbage you produce, at the time you produce it. Ok, perhaps not perfect from the point of view of the sanitation accountants, but as a consumer, I really appreciate this system. |

Well for one, in many areas the garbage men will just ignore your emart bag and it will stay where you put it, possibly get torn up by cats or an old lady may pilfer it to cash it in, tipping your trash onto the street. More importantly the cost of the bag goes towards waste disposal and cleaning up the environment generally. The more people who don't pay their fair share the less money is spent on improving trash collection and disposal.
Have you not heard of the principle of user pays? You create trash so pay to dispose of it. Makes sense doesn't it? |

Hey- just shut up about that, will ya? Keep it quiet, okay?
Canadian municipalities already tax residents for garbage pick up and disposal, right?
And that's why the bags in Korea are expensive, to pay for disposal, agreed?
If a Canadian municipality got wind of the idea they'd love it, but would any residents actually ever see a compensatory reduction in municipal taxes? Not on your life. All it would mean to the average resident is the cost of garbage bags shooting up 1000%.
Next thing you know we'll have people burning crap like plastic and styrofoam in oil barrels in order to save money on purchasing the bags, just like some do in Korea. [the 'who cares about birds when I can save a couple of bucks a week?' folks]
Yes, the above is tongue-in-cheek; I think it would be a great idea if the proceeds went to reforestation and it made people more aware of how much garbage they dispose of. BTW what do large businesses do? Are they exempt from using these bags?
I DO wish my municipality in Canada could manage recycling as well as my neighborhood in Seoul did.... right now recycling here is pretty much a joke and I suspect most of it goes into a landfill anyway. |

Thanks to all the decent people that use the bags.
Those who don't use the bags should be ashamed of themselves.
Throwing away garbage does not come without cost environmentally, and should not come without cost financially.
I don't know where the money goes. If it's for reforestation wonderful. If it is for waste disposal and management also wonderful.
China and Mongolia should do that to stop Yellow dust with reforestation.
It takes minimal effort to find and then purchase the bags. |
Take moral high ground because of some bags...oh wait...you just did!!
If Koreans want this country to be more beautiful, maybe they should stop littering, spitting, and puking on the sidewalks. |

I agree. Don't even give a hint of a new tax to the Canadian government. Taxes are already ridiculous. |

I expected this response. I was supposing that the precondition of using a regulation bag was removed. Now, if the law was changed is there really any difference between an E-mart bag and a regulation bag? No. On a different note, I think wheelie bins would be a good idea. Especially considering that the unsightly piles of rubbish would be removed from the streets. The owner of each wheelie bin could pay a fee to the local government, and this would ensure that those who haven't bought one are much easier to identify, and punish. |

| Are those bags biodegradable? If not then they are contributing to causing extra garbage. Hardly environmerntally sound, is it? |

On this issue I am quite happy to take the moral high ground.
Yes, Koreans should also stop doing the things you mentionned. See, now you're getting the hang of this. |
