We should distinguish between the 3 Cebus

1. Cebu province

2. Cebu City

3. Mactan Island, where many people doing tours of 'Cebu' go,

I am sure #1 has nice places but I saw #2,3 and was not impressed by either.

Bohol is gorgeous. Tons of nice little huts and places to chill along the River there.

I have to agree. As a place to live, Cebu city is nice.
As a place to be a tourist, it is a gateway to somewhere else.

Anyone know of any cheap airlines to Cebu? Cebu Pacific Air has been the cheapest I've seen and their rates just went up to about 450,000 KRW roundtrip, anyone know of anything better?

If you're looking for something cheap in the city, I suggest Cebu Guesthouse. Their rates range from 325 pesos (shared dormitory) to 995 (private room with double bed/aircon/bathroom). There are cheaper places downtown, but you really want to avoid staying in that area. http://www.cebuguesthouse.com/

If you want the beach, I suggest taking the bus+ferry (250pesos) to Bantayan Island, just off Cebu's north coast. There's a lot of cheap beach bungalows (770 pesos and up), and some of the best beaches I've seen anywhere in the world (but NOT a place for diving/snorkeling).

I stayed at the Cebu Guesthouse for 1 night and it was 1 night too long. I have never been in a more cockroach infested place in my life. I get chills just thinking about it.

Really? I didn't see all of Cebu City, but I certainly didn't see anything nice or anywhere I would want to live.

Wow, really? Were you in a dorm or private room? I never saw any roaches. It's a hostel, and it comes with all the good/bad that most hostels include.

I'm sorry I just don't understand people like you. You are in one of the cheapest places on earth. Why would stay at a hostel? A vacation should be a time to indulge, especially when you are in a place where it is so affordable to do so. Yet I continue to meet people who go on vacation only to stay in desperately poor conditions at hostels. I met a guy once who actually did homestays in the Philippines. I just don't get it.

I agree that vacations are a time to indulge, but if traveling for an extended time, say 6 months to a year or more, cheap accomodations are a neccessity. However, I certainly wouldn't whine about cockroaches if I choose to go the cheap route.

You can make deals with guesthouses or small hotels for extended stays but I'd never pay more than two weeks in advance.

I was considering Cebu for an upcoming vacation as well. Glad I read through this.

If I'm heading there with a +1 for a 4 day trip, is it reasonable to hit up Bantayan overnight, Bohol overnight, and spend a night in Cebu? Bear in mind I like a good trip and all but like to minimize stressful journeys and odd wake-up times. Particularly this trip, just looking for something low key and quite relaxing overall.

Keep in mind it takes about 4 hours to get to Bantayan (3 by bus, +1 by ferry), so it's not really worth it to go there for one night.

Pick one otherwise you will spend all your time on the road and never get to relax on a beach.
