I can't wait to try all the horrible Korean beers. How do they stack up vs the Thai or Singapore beers like Singha, Chang or Tiger?
I remember on my flight to Asia last year I was on Korean Airlines and they offered me Budweiser or some Korean brand I have never heard of, I opted for the Korean beer since I had never tried it before, pretty bland stuff. But its not like Budweiser is anything worth bragging about. |

I guess thank god for liquor? I come from micro central.......I'll admit I'm a beer snob...if theres anything I'm dreading in Korea its going to be the lack of quality brew. |

I used to be a beer snob and complain a lot in Korea. Now I just mix soju into my beer and forget about it. I've mostly lost my discriminating taste.
The scene has improved in recent years though. A lot more brewpubs in seoul, and you can get some bottles of half decent stuff like sam adams or newcastle for 5-6 bucks at bars in itaewon. |

Hite really is not all that bad. I don't know about Tiger. I never really liked Tiger that much. I would drink Singha before Tiger, it's obviously better. Budweiser is a tad bit better than Hite maybe even a little better than Chaing. But the extra price for Bud isn't worth it compared to the price for drinking Hite in Korea. Most people in SE Asia know that Beer Lao is the best SE Asian beer you can get. The hops in beer Lao is very good. |

| The best alcohol in the country, Andong soju, is on par with mid level vodka. |
Andong Soju isn't bad, but there's better soju to be had. I don't know the name, but it comes in a bottle shaped like the traditional masks you see in souvenir stores. It's 45% alcohol and has more in common with tequila than vodka; a beautiful, trippy drunk. It's about 40'000 a bottle though. |

This one?

Variation of the end quality of Andong Soju is quite high, depending on which brand you pick - 'Andong Soju' itself is a mere category, and actual products can come from either the holder of Designated National Intangible Heritage or a subsidiary of big, 1K-a-bottle Soju company. The most widely distributed ones in retailers, however, are from the latter. '一品' happens to be one of the inferior Andong Soju as well.
Although unrelated to Andong Soju, HWAYO 41 is getting positive reviews from Koreans, which is easily available in major marts, at least in greater Seoul area.
I'm doing a little research on Korea's non-Soju spirits which even Koreans have barely heard of. Gotta be fun to hold a small convention of some sort and try them all out. |

quote]I went through this as well. My first 6 months in Korea I was always drinking import beers and whiskey when I went out. When I saw how much more my friends were saving I gave up and started drinking swill. I would rather chug an entire bottle of soju and chase it with some banana milk than sip 4 cans of Hite (or Cass or OB). If it's really hot I drink Cafri because it tastes like mineral water. |

bai jiu is pretty bad. i bought a bottle at emart once.. each shot burned in my mouth. after drinking the bottle, the underside my tongue was inflamed and swollen in the morning. it was tender for days, thought i had cancer.
never forget.
that said...i didnt find the taste itself all that bad. no worse than soju or a cheap vodka.
Worst tasting swill goes to Southern Comfort for me. For some reason that stuff was really popular when I was growing up.
Steelrails..You don't like CC? Really? That's my low end whiskey of choice. That or Seagram's. |
Senior High School spring break I drank a full fifth of that stuff....the end result was NOT PRETTY.
I haven't touched the stuff since. |
