Was that really racism, at least on the Korean kid's part? Or just him pointing out to you the truth?

Fortunately its rare, but the racism is unmistakeable at times. You get the truth from the kids because they're too young to know that its not politically correct to openly express it.

K-kids know that you're just a foreigner and not to be taken too seriously. If push comes to shove they sense and know that you have no rights. Because they sense it off the adult koreans. That you're basically unimportant in this country and this community.

They tend to start coming out with some brutal attitudes from about age 11 upwards. Thats partly why I draw the line at teaching middle schoolers or higher.

Interesting.

This phenomenon you describe, btw, is one of the reasons I moved from Korea to Beijing (I'm Stateside now). Say what you will about China (and when speaking of China, one should really confine oneself to specific regions) but responsible English teachers are taken very seriously there. The homogeneity of Korea drives everyone insane in time. Beijing also drove me insane, but for different reasons.

Anyway, it is their country. Good for them for trying to understand that Pakistan is more than a poor country. But I'm not sure multicult will work in Korea, or that they would even want it work.

Yep, racism is alive and well in Korea.

You could replace 'Korea' in this statement with practically any other country in the world. Racsim/Prejudice/Discrimination, call it what you will, is one of the uglier common traits shared by our species.
