And I'm not sure how overpriced the ramen is. It's typically about ~10,000 won for a s***** bowl in Korea, and I'm guessing Ippudo won't be charging much more for it. |
Ippudo in NY is pretty pricey though. i paid $14 for a bowl of ramen when i went last year, so who knows how much it'll cost in Korea.
Some of the better places in the Los Angeles area where I'm from include Santouka (salt-based ramen and probably the best ramen in LA), Hakata Shin-Sen-Gumi (hakata-style tonkotsu ramen) and then there's Daikokuya (which is decent and wildly popular) and these places charge like $6-8ish for a bowl... |
Funny you mention those. Haha, I went to school in SoCal and I've been to all those places. Hated them all. It was more disappointment than actually horrible tasting food. They just didn't hit the spot. And I hate driving in LA... so... yeah.
Still, they were all mediocre (to me). |
i guess your taste buds have been forever spoiled by japan...and rightfully so, of course... |

sounds like you hate every place expect this place.
well please keep in mind, that the cooks here wont be the cooks you had at momofuku or other ramean places. so don't hold your breath.
and considering its cheongdamn dong, you can expect the prices to be over 10.000 won. I am thinking 12-14.000
rents are very high.. |

I've never been to the NYC location. As I mentioned in the OP, it's a chain in Japan. It's the first of it's kind to make it over to Korea, so, as a fan of ramen and food in general, of course I'd be excited.
I am well aware that the cooks are obviously not going to all be shipped over. I am fairly confident that they will have a few people come over to supervise the opening and perhaps maintain a certain standard of quality for some time.
Also, I'd gladly pay 12-14k won considering you pay about 1000yen for a bowl in Japan.
Not sure why you decided to sit on this thread in particular, but it's a bit pointless, no? It's apparent you're not into food and probably think we're getting excited over a fancy, done-up bowl of Shin Ramyun.
In any case, I'm done addressing you in this thread. |

thanks for the heads up...I used to live in Japan also and have found it nigh on impossible to find an authentic tasting Japanese ramen place here.....I did find a pretty good one in Hongdae (through my Japanese friends) last year mind and it even had a Japanese ramen chef (maybe owner too). It closed down recently unfortunately which seemed a bit baffling as it seemed to always be busy
I`ll happily pay 12-14k for a proper bowl of ramen.....I`m not having high expectations though...
(saying that, some of the ramen places here are not as bad as the UK`s ramen places....many Brits think Wagamama (chain restaurant) is tasty and like proper Japanese food. ) |

I've been to Japan, and I know I sound biased when I say this, but in my hometown in America is where I've had the best Ramen noodles (and I had a lot in Japan). It's called Toshi's Ramen, owned and operated by a Japanese guy who came to America about 10 years ago and still comes in at 6 AM every day to make his ramen noodles from scratch using Japanese ingredients. All together he's there 15 hours a day, 6 days a week. The man is a machine... But my god, the miso Ramen nin-niku with pork... sweet Jesus it is good.
The place is packed from open to close and they only close one day a month... which is every day I want to go, it seems like! I'll definitely miss that place! |

Ramen is a lot like Mexican food outside of Mexico. Everyone's got their own opinion of what's good and what's not.
I like Hakata style. Does Ippudo do that? |

Any supposed good franchise opening in Korea is good for everyone, especially, in this case, for people who love ramen.
But is it necessary for you to proclaim yourself as an expert in ramen and anything that you disliked as "Garbage" and accusing of others of having "terrible taste?" You sound a lot like preteen fanboy and you are surprised that someone has "sit on this thread in particular"? |

So am I not entitled to my opinion? And you can't think that I was serious about that terrible taste bit
There are a lot of threads on these forums with seriously elitist, know-it-all, radical views about things like racism, xenophobia, etc. and you're harping on me about noodles?
Get a grip. |

I never said it was garbage! I said there are plenty of authentic japanese noodle places already in Korea, and plenty of fresh noodle bars here.
so don't get to excited for this opver priced franchised which was a hit in NYC.
the japanese colonized this country for almost 40 years.. you don't think you can find japanese noodles here?
that was my point.. if you know the culinary spots in Korea, you will know there are plenty of places already like this..
I was not the one slamming other places as garbage.. that was Bloop!
he dissed every place he had tried in Korea as crap! and praised this place without actually even dining there yet..
I only stated their products are filled with MSG, and don't expect the same cooking you once had in NYC as the ingredients are different, the water is different, possibly the flour too.
I said, it's going to be over priced ramean.. but ethnic ramen places are plentiful in Korea, owned and operated by japanese..
but I wouldn't expect most of you know where they are as most of you probably don't get out of Hongdae, Itaewon or kangnam st!
jesus, this is starting to turn into the TACO BELL thread..
yes to some TACO BELL is the greatest mexican food to be had..
to others it's garbage..
food is subjective.. |

This is true, for the most part. But Kenzo Ramen is definitively garbage.
Do you know any good Hakata-style places? You can private message if desired. I just miss Hakata ramen.

Online sarcasm works better when made obvious. See "Bin Laden Is Alive!" thread in Offtopic for an example of sarcasm fail.

Well, yeah, because a topic like noodles is innocuous enough that everybody feels comfortable disagreeing over it. The last thing I want to do is get in an online argument with a racist jerkface. A noodle snob? Not so big a deal. |

My friend said it's set to open on the 28th. I'm camping out for sure!
I'm under the firm belief that good Japanese food cannot be found outside of Japan. If you disagree, you have terrible taste and/or have never been to Japan.
I doubt it'll be as good as in Japan, but one can only hope! |
Looks good. OP, please post directions when it is open. |
