Good luck with that, you'll have rioting going on in the cafeteria demanding the return of fish sticks and chicken nuggets.

America's doomed.

It isn't supposed to be a brainer: mom vs. the government. It is hard to believe some people are actually struggling with this one.

Or the government could just give the kids a Korean cafeteria lunch. It's not the pinnacle of healthy eating- white rice, salt. But it would be light years ahead of brown bagged ham sandwiches/lunchables and fish sticks with tater tots.

Spam doesn't count as ham?

So what are we supposed to believe then?

I don't think that banning packed lunches is the way forward, but more of a compromise is needed, for example schools should have the right to demand that parents actually send their sprogs to school with something nutritious.

I watched the Jamie Oliver series "American Food Revolution" and even I was shocked at the crap the pupils were being sent to school with. If you send your child to school with nothing to eat except fat and sugar, isn't that negligence?

I wouldn't doubt there are some people on here who'd like to abolish the family altogether... Just take all babies away at birth and have them raised by the state. If you gave Leon a magic wand to wave, he'd probably make it happen...

Have you ever been to an American high school? Many of them are literally serviced by the same companies that service prisons. I kid you not. The food is absolute crud (processed, deep fried junk). Even if some negligent parents send their kids off with a pack of Cheetos or some pop-tarts to eat, it still wouldn't be much worse than eating the school lunches.

Not everyone holds an extreme position on things. I do believe in choice, but I find that many choices parents make are dismal and damaging to the kids. I don't believe the state should dictate, it was more me being at work and being bored/slightly philosophical than advocating government control. I've read brave new world, I'm not a socialist, nice try though.

I have seen US school "food" on TV only. I do not believe in the school continuing to feed the pupils mushed up recovered meat with fries - if the schools insist that parents send nutritious food, then their dining rooms should also be serving up good, healthy fare.

Obviously with the power that many of the catering companies have over local, state and federal (?) government this will be easier said than done.

That's absolutely true. But it's also worked out pretty well for our species for tens of thousands of years, too. I think that when people take on the burden and responsibility of raising children, they also acquire the right to "parent" them as they see fit.

The only saving grace should be that children who fail because of terrible parents should be less likely to reproduce and repeat the cycle. But unfortunately, humanity has strayed rather far beyond the process of natural selection :- /

Where do you draw the line? Should parents be allowed to encourage 5 year olds to smoke?
