I understand the analogy but still can't quite understand why you seem to carry so much bitterness towards a place where you admitted yourself you spent the best years of your life (so far).

So, is it Germany you are going to? Where abouts? I'm in the Netherlands now for the next year anyway. I was very excited about moving (back) to Europe for a while but to be honest it's been all I was hoping for Crying or Very sad

Just ready to be done with this place and it's miserable social system. Down with the patriarchy etc. The best times I've had are when I've been hanging out with other foreigners. And the money. Can't forget the money. Being truly broke is more terrifying than being harrassed at on the subway all the time but that doesn't make being harrassed on the subway totally okay. For one example.

I think you're missing a not somewhere there. Or you have the wrong smilie. If I'm reading it right, what is not living up to expectations?

You're right, I missed a "not"!

Well, the following is only for the Netherlands: Reality is things are insanely expensive, the start up costs have been terrifying not to mention day-to-day things (groceries are the only things cheaper). Eating out, cinema trips, museums, travelling short and long distances are all 3-5 times more expensive than they were in Korea. My girlfriend makes good money but even that is streched considering our rent is so high!

IMO there isn't as much to do. Don't get me wrong, the Netherlands obviously cans Korea in terms of the quality of things to do but when can you do them? Everything closes before my girlfriend and I finish work. And then not to mention the price of those things. Everything closes so so early. Back to one day of late night shopping a week, last movie at 9pm, restaurants closing at 10-10.30 midweek, shortened opening hours on Sundays and public holidays.

Crime and antisocial behaviour. I forgot how threatening groups of men were, cause you know in Korea they just aren't. I'll take 4 drunk adjosshis stinking up a train before I take 6 Turkish/Moroccoa/Somalian etc teenagers glaring at me and eyeing up my bird!

We both are working less and have more free time but it feels like we have way less fun.

P.S She goes on a business trip twice a month. I go to the local coffe shop and then call dominos. On thos days I love the Netherlands! Twisted Evil

I'll be in Berlin which is cheeeeeap. That's pretty much my entire reasoning for choosing Berlin. I've checked out apartments online and I'll be paying more but not much more for a smaller but nicer place. The rental sites also say how much your bills are going to be so I've already considered that too. Groceries are cheap all over Germany.

The lack of convenience is something I knew about and consider a downside. Grocery stores closed on Sunday? Bah!! And not having five convenience stores on every corner is also going to be hard to adjust to.

I'll go ahead and admit that the Netherlands was my least favorite place in Europe. When I did my European tour 2 years ago (gah so long) it was to decide where I would want to live. Belgium was the best place, but Germany (second best) was more realistic with language and costs.

As far as fun, I'll be a student so there should be a lot of fun cheap things. Students get deals on all kinds of things too, I think. And it's Berlin.

Aye man, Berlin is amazing. No doubt! Visited myself and loved it. Little suprised what you say about it being cheap, although I wouldn't class it as expensive I certainly wouldn't be rushing to class it as cheap either. Your a student yeah? At least that way you can work part time and not have to worry about a Visa or anything. What will you be studying if you don't mind me asking?

Renting an apartment is cheap. Attending university is cheap. Groceries are cheap. Maybe things like movies, eating out, going to the club, etc are as expensive as the rest of Europe, but as long as the basics are cheap I'll be doing okay.

Engineering. Sick of liberal arts job purgatory.
