Soju and whiskey?

Yeah, that made me throw up in my mouth. That's like adding WD40 to synthetic oil.

I wouldn't rate Seoul at number one even within Korea. Top 10 maybe.

I was surprised when I saw the title. I like workin in Korea and think Seoul is a great city and always love visiting it but didn't regard it as the best in Asia much less the world. Not close. But 'best' is subjective to some degree.

Honestly though, I wanted to find fault in the list and looked through it expecting to tear it apart easily but gotta admit. Its a damn good list. I still don't think its the best city in Asia much less the world but I couldn't fault the reasoning.

I will say though that a lot of list could be found in any major Korean city of size and a lot of the smaller ones. With a few exceptions (Airport for example, which technically is Incheon), that list could be said of Busan, Deagu or Daejeon.

The bonus is I printed the list to use in my free talk class. Thanks for the topic! Wink

I guess the post was simply part of a collection of articles on why certain cities are great or so. The Seoul list, however, made too many references to food.

I rolled my eyes through most of the list. But I needed a good laugh...I'm grateful for the article for giving me one, as did comments like this:

in reply to RupertMarcusGettyIII
Very good points. Koreans think their fashion is very cutting edge and progressive when it is, as you mentioned Rupert, downright weird and laughable if you ask me. Korean men dress like downright nerdy homosexuals. Call me homophobic, but when I see how gay Korean men dress I feel like slapping them in the face and asking them 'are you a girl? Korean men's fashion has always been on the effeminate side, but has become even more gay because of the Japanese influence. Now Korean male pop stars are even trying to ACT gay.

Yes Seoul is an ugly city. Nothing more than a disorderly mass of concrete and neon.

Seoul is incredibly boring, stressful and ugly. Tries overly hard to be trendy, but fails. Korean fashion is not trendy of beautiful, just plain weird. Most people are ugly nerds with no sense of fashion or style, even the women. The so-called Royal Palace is a disgrace. Winters are shocking; down to minus 15 C and the Incheon Airport runway is not maintained adequately. It was covered in inches of snow last time I landed in January and that was a scary experience to land on a white snow-covered runway. Number 1 airport in the world? No way.

For me the one thing that Seoul has compared to cities of its size or even much smaller globally is how safe it is. Very tough to find a city of 10 mil or even half that size that doesn't have a few neighborhoods you can't venture into. Tokyo possibly being the other but Rome, Paris, London, NYC, Athens, Hong Kong, Beijing, Sydney, Buenas Aires, Sydney, Moscow, Mexico City, Rio, Toronto, Berlin, etc. all have at least one or two dodgy areas (usually more) where there's a good chance you can be robbed or killed.

Fashion wise its shocking a city of Seouls size and modernity is so ignorant of the current global fashion tastes. Tokyo knows them but will often do their own thing. Seoul has no idea. Its not that it wants to do its own thing either. Seoul (which is symbolic for all Korea) has no idea whatsoever.

Physically, I also agree its incredibly boring. Its the foreigners and visitors that adds some character to the city (Itaewon, Hongdae) not the other way around in most cities.

Basically, its one of the rare huge global cities you have to leave to acquire any sophistication, unlike NY, London or Paris where you go there to acquire sophistication.

#30 and 32- Huh? Who wrote this? What does this have to do with Seoul? Only Simon and Martina love K-Pop. The rest of us see it for what it is- a waste of time.

I found #'s 44 and 41 pretty desperate as well.

44: Booking
While ignoring the fact the huge potential for sexual assault, I suppose this is a positive aspect of strangers hooking up for casual sex.

41: Most committed celeb stalkers
I think most people here should be committed- but in a different way.

They're just two ladies paying homage to a city that really fits their tastes well. Asians like Korea a lot.

I certainly don't agree with the declaration that it's the world's greatest city, but I'm sure it's a lot better than many places where you guys are from, no offense.

Overall I think Seoul is boring compared to some other cities, for sure... especially for a foreigner.

But I have many friends (some execs in luxury brands) that would disagree with you. They always speak very highly of Seoul as a fashion city. There's not only a huge fashion market here but a very smart one as well.

Finally, I think you are either sophisticated or you're not. At this point in life, no one is going to gain or lose anything. A city will either accentuate your sophistication or expose your utter lack of it. If you stuck 80% of the people from Dave's into Paris for a year, they would get their asses kicked.

New York is like the University of Phoenix of sophistication -- everyone gets a chance at pretending they're somebody. No other city gives away fake coolness like it was candy. In LA you gotta at least be somebody or have money to act cool.

Until people flock here to study fashion, I'd say you are full of BS

+1

California gyopos usually spew this kind of crap. Take away their money and they're nothing. Which means they're nothing to begin with.

You guys need some serious critical thinking classes.

That's exactly my point. In LA you have to have accomplished something to be somebody, otherwise you're a loser.

In New York, especially in Manhattan, no one's a loser. Actually most people are just jumping from job to job living the New York life. They live in a cool neighborhood and have some sort of vague job that they sell as being cool or high paying (usually not the case 99% of the time). In NY you can fake being successful or having an awesome life. That's why people go there.

It's harder to do "hide behind the city" in LA. It's a lot less forgiving.
