| Sorry if you've posted this elsewhere, but did you need to apply for (and receive) the F5 after you had gotten the F2-99? |
I got my F2-99 first. I could have applied for the F5 direct, but from experience, taking the front door approach seldom works in Korea.
Besides, getting the F2 was, in my case, a better idea. It only took 5 weeks to get this Visa.
The F5 took 4 months. |
Thanks for your reply. It seems I accidentally left out "what" from my question the first time around - I had intended to ask what you needed to do/submit to get the F5 after you received the F2-99. Sorry for the trouble. |
1. Prove that you have earned the equivalent of a normal Korean for 2010. That is, the Gross National Income (GNI). 2010 was around US $20 000.
2. Test of Proficiency in Korean. You need to pass the TOPIK test level 2 & above.
3. 5 years on an E2 Visa uninterupted. |

Couple firsts here.
First first is that I've never heard of someone going from F-2 to F-5 with only 4 months on the F-2. Immigration has in the past required 2 years on the F-2 before you were eligible to apply for the F-5.
Second first is the TOPIK requirement, or any language requirement for that matter.
Interesting changes....

I checked with BOK and the GNI in Korean won was 24 Million for 2010.
Congrats on getting your visa! |

My guess is he was able to do this since he had been on the E-2 visa for 5 years. |

What you are referring to is the migration from F2-1 to F5.
For someone on an F2 who wants to get the F5 ahead of the 2 year waiting time, you only need to prove the GNI & TOPIK requirement.
It is possible to apply for the F5 within days of receiving your F2 as long as you can show & prove the above. |

Picked up my F5 Visa from Immigration yesterday.
The card has been totally redesigned (radically).
Also, they did not put any kind of stamp in my Passport, nor did they cancel my F2 Visa.
Got to immigration at around 6pm, so had no chance to ask why this was the case.
Off to Immigration next week with my wife to sponsor her F2 Visa. Will ask about this then. |

Great news mate, congrats!
Stupid question maybe, but were/are you an English teacher? |
Yes. |
If only the F-5 meant an all inclusion equivalent to a native English speaker or 'woneomin.' |

Not many people can say they had an e-2 for 5 years uninterrupted. That means you never went home longer than vacation and you just kept extending your e-2.
You must have had a couple good jobs since you've been here. |

Congrats! that's awesome. I'm hoping to do the same. I was going to try for the F2-s points, but in order to get the 80 points I would need Korean level 2, which I could pull off, but I'd also need the vague "overseas specialist" points and no one seems to know what they are or what paperwork it entails. Only 3.5 more years, then I can apply for the F2 points |

Follow up on my wife's F2....
Went to Immigration yesterday and submitted all the paperwork.
The application was successful. Pick up my wife's F2 at the end of the month.
For anyone in the same situation i.e. Someone with an F5 sponsoring your spouse (non-Korean), you need 2 marriage certificates.
In our case we needed a marriage certificate registered in both the UK and the Philippines. One from each of our respective countries. |

Congrats! Good to know about the marriage cert, I'm guessing it has to be apostillised and translated as well? |

No. That wasn't necessary. As long as both were in English. |

Received a call from Immigration last week to inform me that my F5 application had been approved and that I could collect my Passport and Visa on July 1st.
History:
Had an E2 from January 2006 to January 2011.
Applied for the F2-99 and received it 5 weeks later.
Applied for the F5 on March 3rd. Will collect it July 1st. Just shy of 4 months to receive this Top Dog of a Visa !!!
On the plus side...I can now sponsor my Philippina wife an F2.
Just so there is no confusion, I obtained both the F2 and F5 on my own merit. I am not married to a Korean.
Life is GOOD. |
God for you but don't you mean you can sponsor your wife to a F3 (dependant visa) as opposed to a F2 (resident visa)? |
An F5 holder can sponsor his/her spouse for an F2. As far as I know this is the only visa where this is possible. It really is as close as you can be to a Korean citizen without actually being one. |
r122925 is 100% correct on the above.
When I was on an E2, I could only sponsor my wife an F3.
On my F2 she changed her Visa to an F1.
On the F5, we have the same rights and privileges as a Korean National. That is the right to sponsor our spouse and children an F2. Come to think of it, my children will get an F5 right out of the box. Trying for kids at present. Too much info....I know...but what the hell...I am in a good mood.
The only thing we cannot do, is vote in elections. |
Congrats Welshguy. And enjoy your cyborg F5 unboxing.
lol sorry, couldn't resist. I'm happier to see long-timers get the beans rather than those who get it on 'eligibility'.
Once again, congrats. |

I'd imagine that after a couple years on an F2, your wife will be able to change to an F5 too. |
