gambling ruins lives... this is one of the things i like about korean culture. they realize that fact and also realize that gambling leads to other illegal activities like loan sharking which is a huge problem in vancouver BC where i'm from. the post the other guy said about being rich enough to travel means u have enough money to throw around gambling is a good point. it's not like these guys have a lot of disposable income. i would like to try out one of these underground poker rooms tho haha sounds kinda fun. i have quite a bit of disposable income =)

I think casinos in general are a joke. Casinos are illegal in my state, but there are a few just across the border a 10 minute ride from my house. On the tv commericals it looks like a big party and everyone's happy. But when I actually went there, it was 80% old people with dead soulless eyes pumping coins in slot machines. It's a really depressing place. I'll never go back into any casino. It's a stupid waste of time anyway. I think Korea is smart for limiting casino access to just foreigners.

Saddest part about gambling is the fever.

The hope that spending X amount will net twice- but its usually not that case. The gambler will never listen do you because their passion is so strong that they will want to give it 'one more chance' then fail again.

However, I do believe it is one of those vices that people will engage in no matter what the government says. Like prostitution and drugs, its a vice people will never give up- so legalize it and tax.

It would be foolish to let more and more Koreans turn to gambling only to help casino operators survive. No one can deny that Koreans are notorious for their proclivity for gambling that has already reached a dangerous point. The nation should not allow any more casinos to admit locals.

If I read the ticket correctly, if Koreans go to the Gangwondo casino on 15 or more days in each of two consecutive calendar months, they have to attend counselling before they let them back in.

We were going to go in and rubberneck but after turning up right before opening time at 10am, our tickets put us 2215th in the queue. The scene in the lobby was depraved enough.

I know I'll sound like a broken record saying this, but Gambling is a tax on people who are bad at math. I would say that about the gamblers as well as the politicians who promote this kind of snake oil. Just who do the politicians think frequent the casinos? Sure, there's a few wealthy high rollers out there but most foreigners in Korea don't make all that much money. Which means that the politicians don't care if ESL teachers end up living off bread crumbs. But if middle class Koreans start flocking to the Casinos, little Minju's family may have a hard time paying that hagwon fee.

Koreans have an addictive personality.
it's best it's left illegal for them to enter..
the ones who are hardcore and addicted can drive to gangwonland.
once it's legal here, 20 million people can be in one within 20mins.

the casinos are only looking for more money!
they should all be closed down frankly.

If people want to gamble, they should learn how to play poker. Playing poker is different to the other games in the casino. It's against other humans, not against the house where the odds are stacked against you. Play poker against people worse than you, it's really easy to identify the fish after a couple of rounds. It is actually that simple to always leave the casino with winnings.

Koreans were never allowed in most Korean casinos for a reason. The Koreans know why this rule was in place. The reasons for not allowing Koreans in casinos have not changed, and if they allow easy access to the general population; there will be some really bad and uniquely Korean consequences.
