I have to add, because I didn't make it clear, that the doc of course knew that Accutane causes birth defects -- though I'm unsure to what extent they screen women who are put on it.

I had friends on accutane in Canada, who complained that they had to get the birthcontrol shot while on accutane, because it's more goof proof and there's a resultingly lower pregnancy rate with it. Pretty strong precautions. |

I took accutane for about 6 months, and the only bad side effects I had were the dry nose/skin/lips/scalp and that wasn't such a big deal.
I've had a recent annoying outbreak and was thinking of going back on-the thing that annoys me is that some doctor's here will now demand that you have birth control shots before you can have accutane. it doesn't seem particularly fair to deny someone one medication, unless they will also take another-those birth control shots can have horrible side effects and are no more effective than the pill (the only difference being that you don't have to remember to do anything.) It just seems a bit condescending to say to someone-you can't get pregnant while on this, and the only way you are allowed to ensure you don't get pregnant is X method. I mean, c'mon, I've been controlling my fertility for 10 years now. I think I can handle it. I can see possibly using it with certain individuals, but as a blanket requirement it seems stupid. |

I think it was about 7,000 won for two weeks worth. Yes, that's right; the doc prescribed freaking Accutane for two weeks, to clear up what was only a minor outbreak.
Buy the Way(tm): acne medication is NOT covered by medical insurance.

My prescription in Canada was about $2000 for six months I think. Thank God I had a prescription drug plan under my father. |

Roaccutane in Australia is subsidised by the government under the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme). If you fall under the lowest income bracket, and receive welfare, you are also eligible for a Health Care Card benefit.
This means a box is about $4 AUD. For the average guy, about $20.
$7000.. wow, that's completely unfathomable... :(

I took it when I was 17, junior in high school. Don't remember how long I took it, but it was at least 3 months. Had to get a blood test once a month.
Side-effects for me: dry skin/chapped lips, easily sunburnt, that's it.
Result: no more acne outbreaks, maybe a pimple once-twice a year.
Last May I had a breakout, which I thought was acne becoming back with a vegance. I was really pissed off, went to dermitologist. Turns out I had chicken pox |

I also took accutane when I was about 16/17 1nd while I can't remember much of it but remember that the doctor x-rayed my wrist, to see how far developed I was, to make sure that the course wouldn't stunt my growth/height.
It cleared my acne but more importantly it prevented me from getting cyst type of pimple that cause bad scarring, at a time when I was most susceptable to it.

I took it ity off and on for a couple of years back when I was a student.
Got the dry lips, which was an annoyance and the worst headache of my life when I tried a higher dosage (Docs orders I wasn't uping the doage on my own!) That headache really freaked me, so I stayed on a really low dosage that did the trick, it just took a lot longer,
Iff you get the side affects, the drug sure sux, |

|
|
In Korea AKNAL is available. It contains 10mg of Isotretinoin, which is the active ingredient in Accutane. All Isotretinoin meds are very expensive in the USA, even generics with 30 day supply easily costing $200-500, depending on the strength.
However, to my surprise, I got easily prescription for AKNAL for my son (the prescription visit only cost 13,000 won). Since all isotretinoin meds are VERY dangerous and forbidden for pregnant women, getting it for a male is much easier.
The only strength available is 10mg, which is weak and that's why it is available relatively easy. For a 50kg male, one needs probably 20mg per day at least. Anyway, what I found that is that pharmacies charge very different rates. One pharmacy wanted nearly 200,000 won for 30 pills of AKNAL, while another wanter 30,000. Eventually, I found one that gave me exactly the same AKNAL 30 pills for 12,500 won, which is ridiculously cheap compared to the USA.
The doctor said to refrain from greasy foods as Isotretinoin tends to increase cholesterol levels and avoid sunbathing and damaging skin because skin repair slows down under isotretinoin. Otherwise, it is the only miracle drug available for treating acne. Most of bad rap about it is not warranted (aside from severe birth defects if pregnant women takes it) but my som got dry lips and drier skin, which goes away once you stop taking it. |

I know everyone reacts to Accutane differently, but it did absolutely nothing for me. I took for almost 2 years with no results.
The only thing that has brought me results for my acne is washing with zinc based head and shoulders shampoo. (look it up it has done amazing things for other people).
I've suffered HORRENDOUS acne for about 10 years, with no signs of slowing down. It didn't change until I started using head and shoulders shampoo and applying it lightly to the face.
Try it, you have nothing to lose, don't rub it in though you have to apply it very lightly for it to work. I saw results in 2 days. |

I had acne my entire life from the age of about 12 years old until 3 months ago.
Milk, dudes. Milk.
I switched from dairy milk to soy milk to cut back on sugars, and 2 weeks later, my skin was almost completely clear. I didn't change anything else. I've also tried everything under the sun- several types of pills (not accutane, though), several birth controls, every cream and cleanser yada yada yada. Nothing worked. But I stopped drinking dairy milk and bang, perfect skin except for the scars and the occasional clogged pore.
I'd recommend trying the switch away from dairy to anyone who has acne. It doesn't occur to most people that their diet can affect their skin, and it definitely didn't occur to me until I realized that my acne was suddenly gone and nothing else had been changed. Happy accident. ^^ If you look around the internet, there's speculation that dairy milk causes acne, but apparently not enough studies have been to done to say it's a guaranteed cause. Definitely seems to be the culprit for me, though. |

? I think it is a skin drying cream that kills zits quickly, the same thing as Accutane but in a cream form. I've thought about getting it from time to time. Maybe not now. From the Retin-A website:

Retin A is topical, Accutane is internal. It used to be that Accutane was used only for Acne where there where Acne cysts. Otherwise Retin A is fairly good for acne. Why not have your doctor prescribe Retin A first. Retin A doesn't work by drying the skin. It works by reducing the outer dead cutaneous portion of your skin. It reduces it by causing your living skin underneath to grow faster. The outer layer of your skin doesn't linger on top as long. Interestingly enough this is the same reason Retin A is good for sun damaged skin and reducing wrinkles.
If your skin dries from applying Retin A then use the cream form rather than the stuff that uses Alcohol. |
