If you're a teacher from any of the 7 countries (and even if you aren't) you know very well that its impolite to speak ill of the dead and its a cultural norm not to. So, either you know and don't like the practice (my guess) or you really don't know (unlikely).

A deceased person usually has greiving famrily and friends. Everyone has faults. A deceased person as well as your own faults are overlooked by the people who care about you and they love you in spite of your faults while you're alive. Offering the same courtesy in death is not too much to ask. I would question the humanity of someone who would want to add to someone's grief by speaking ill of the dead.

Actually, it shouldn't be too surprising that someone exists, who does not know about this. Really, it seems that manners and etiquette seem to be on a decline around the world and especially in the West.

I often read these things and wonder why no one ever says anything bad.

I was at a school in China where the DoS was living with a prostitute and had a heart attack and died. She refused to leave the school unless they gave her money for a train back to her hometown.

None of this was mentioned.

lol

Were you hopping his prompt eulogy said he was another lost soul who couldn't make it back home and spent 7 years being a drunken expat kindergarten teacher in asia satisfying an asian fetish.

In this world today
while we're living
some folks say the worst of us they can.
But when we're dead
and in our caskets
they always slip some lilies in our hand.
Won't you give me flowers
while I'm living?

How about killers? Rapists? Thieves? Guys who abandon children? Where do you draw the line between remembering the person for the good things they did in their lives and being glad the world is rid of them? I don't think he means you pile on the deceased. Remember the persons life as a whole and follow the old phrases "if you can't say something nice..."

p.s. manners and etiquette are on decline especially in the West? That was a fancy mix of being self rightous and narrow minded in the same paragraph

Obviously no one is going to offer platitudes to the likes of Hitler or Charles Manson. You're being literal when you know I mean the average person. If you're trying to suggest the practice of speaking politely about someone who has died should be changed, then say so. The thing is you know you would slug a person who spoke ill of a family member while you're grieving your loss.
Bottom line is, it was insensitive of the poster to suggest that. And much worse trying to defend it.
