Good information guys, here is my problem. This is my first year in Korea, so I did all the paperwork background checks diploams etc. just last August 2010. Now this August 2011 I would like to transfer my visa to a new school. However:
1. My visa expires August 12th
2. My current school contract will be finished August 24th
3. My new job with a different school will start August 29th.
I'll buy anyone a beer if they can tell me how I go about extending/transferring the visa with no problems. |

2) Leave Korea before your ARC expires and return. Depending on your country of passport you will get from 30-180 days on a visa free entry stamp.

Ttompatz, what's the max number of days can Americans get on their ARC extension? |

Free extension on an E2 = 30 days *not allowed to work, cannot be extended again and cannot transfer to a new job.
.
Paid for WORK extension (new contract) = 1 to 366 days.
Exit, hand in your ARC and return as a tourist, an American would get 90 days (as a tourist), entry on arrival, B1 stamp.

Thanks ttompatz for your reply. Would it be possible to exit, come back and get 90 days as a tourist, leave again towards the end of the period and come back again, and get another 90 days? So say total of about 180 days?
A Korean friend of mine asked me to stay in Korea to help him with a project right after my contract with my hagwon finishes. Depending on the circumstances, this project may last for about six months.
I could ask for an extension of my hagwon contract but, the project itself is a full-time job and would be rather difficult to work during that time. |

Yes, BUT....
You MAY, if you are flying in, be asked to show proof of onward passage.
On the 2nd time back, immigration MAY ask for proof of residence and proof of funds to show that you are "not working illegally".

For proof of funds and work (the project that is), I believe I should be able to show ample proof.
In regards to residence, can I get an apartment on an expired E-2 visa for the extension of my stay? If not, would immigration accept if I say that I'm staying with some friends for the duration of my extension?
Could you clarify what "show proof of onward passage" means?
Thanks again ttompatz for your help. |

Unless you have a visa that allows your "work" on the project you may need to show a bank statement showing enough funds to support yourself for the duration of your stay.
They will want to know where you live (a friends address is adequate).
The requirements for visa waived entry include proof that you will be leaving Korea at the end of your stay. Onward passage (air or sea ticket out of Korea) is a requirement and the airline may not let you board the flight to Korea (for your return) if you don't have it.

I understand now in regards to extensions. Your answers have helped me much. I will still go to the immigration office for more clarification but now I know where I stand and what questions I need to ask.
Would it be possible to simply apply and obtain a new visa or ARC while here in Korea? |

Change of status from E2 to ???
Probably not.
You would most likely need to have your new employer apply for a new visa confirmation number then do a visa run to obtain your new visa.
The visa class would depend on the nature of the job.

Judging from the nature of the project, I believe that it would be classified under the E-6 visa category.
The project duration is about six months, but won't pick up until the last three months. Therefore, would immigration be willing to accept an extension of my contract with my hagwon for about three months, then I switch over to the tourist visa for the last three months? |

Nope. Violation of your status of sojourn.
Either come back as a tourist and take your chances or start the paperwork for your E6 (entertainer) visa (it is complex and will take longer than an E2 to accomplish).

Is it possible to apply and obtain an E-6 visa while here in Korea? Or is this something that requires my presence in the US? |

Your employer can start the paperwork while you are in Korea.
You will need to do a visa run to Japan to change your status.

Your new sponsor unless your hagwan wants to employ you on an E6 instead of an E2 (perhaps as a clown/entertainer instead of a teacher).
