Who's dictating to them that they must eat junk food against their volition?

well corporations have a big part in it:

example: KFC got a huge fine because they were primarily located in lower income neighborhoods on purpose

also, Dollar Menu Items are a cheap way to get full as healthy choices usually cost more than a buck

i agree that it is a CHOICE, but for many lower income people, i can understand why and less so for people middle and upper class who have options

This is definitely NOT the fault of the "corporations" and NOT a "problem" to be fixed by government.

Most people just need to exercise more or eat less.

so you DON'T think its the fault of a corporation for targeting low income individuals exclusively? meaning there were no KFC's in high to middle income areas...this is just one example, there's plenty more

so if the American government is in charge of school lunch meals at the very earliest age namely elementary through high school which in large part, shapes most peoples future adult eating habits outside of home influences meaning government decides whether it could be a healthy low calorie lunch - say sandwich, fruit, and milk vs. high calorie pizza, high cal. snack, and a drink with little to no vitamins, its not a Government problem since THEY DO decide it but its not their problem?

Exercise is KEY yes, but its not a one-stop all solution

High calorie food was developed and peferred throughout history because people needed it. People worked hard - 97% were farmers, and most of the rest performed some kind of labor. Farmers and laborers typically need to eat 4000 calories per day - some less, some far more.

These days the typical American lives a sedentary lifestyle and needs only 1800 calories per day, more or less.

There is nothing wrong with the food. In fact, many farmers, laborers and high-performance athletes still need these high calorie food options. Cheap, high-calorie food is essential for them if they are not high income earners.

Most people just need to exercise more or eat less.

High-calorie...unbalanced...protein/carbs/fat...is a problem.

To say there is nothing wrong with the food is misleading...there is a lot wrong with the food...(if we are talking about high calorie corn derivatives)

But the biggest problem is ignorance...matched with a sedentary lifestyle.

Why is there so many threads about fatties?, why is every other thread about buying protien shakes?, if I owned a kfc I would have it where I get the most customers.
And since when were carbs bad for you?
Maybe it's to hard to cook a few veges, take the kids to the park, go for a walk.
Anyway, what has fat Americans got to do with esl in Korea?

Give me affordable foods/drinks without HFCS, and I'll give you obesity in America plummeting by 50% in 10 years.

I guess most people who eat (or drink or..) to excess do so because they are unhappy with themselves. Maybe it's an emotional problem as much as anything else.

Yeah, health foods for cafeterias is a good idea

I blame parents. Fat parents buy fat food and give them to kids.....

Do fit and healthy parents eat salad and then buy their kids mcdonalds?

a documentary called KING CORN sheds some light on how cheap, subsidized corn is processed into all manner of high sugar foods. Not healthy, but cheap. Git me one of those $1 double cheese burgers....

"Behind America's dollar hamburgers and 72-ounce sodas is a key ingredient that quietly fuels our fast-food nation: corn. In KING CORN , recent college graduates Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis leave the east coast for rural Iowa, where they decide to grow an acre of the nation’s most powerful crop"

Yes, because it's the HFCS and not the ridiculous amount of carbs people eat in general, right. I'm sure that if we replaced Pepsi with Pepsi Throwback, it would magically would turn into Pepsi Diet Throwback!!!!!!

The issue is cheap carbs.

Although, true, there is no excuse for drinking so much soda. That stuff needs to be done away with.

To the person who mentioned that government needs to get involved.

It's actually becoming a security issue. If young 18 year old men are too fat to serve in the armed forces, you have a problem. You don't want the obesity rate to go up too much, or else you'll be lacking the core backbone of your country: a strong military.

You'll have Al Queida running around you in circles.

So, Americans! It's get thin or die... the terrorists will get you if the heart attack doesn't!!!!

This would have some merit if the old "a calorie is a calorie" fallacy were true... and if historically farmers and laborers were eating the highly processed, nutritionally devoid matter they're eating now. "Food" is a very generous term for what most people consume these days.

High performance athletes aren't eating McDonald's. The good stuff is more expensive, but you'll eat less of it and feel full. There is nothing wrong with high-calorie foods, but sugar and empty calories are a serious problem.

Obese people are malnourished. They get through huge quantities of swill but it's mostly low-grade fat and carbs with very little in the way of essential vitamins and minerals.

Agribiz: keep frying the land with nitrates and pumping swill down the throats of the masses. There's so much money in it, the nation's health can go to hell.
