what is he average wage in japan right now? (ets say korea is 2.1 right now) in terms of won?
i also miss living in japan. |
Between 1.8m and 2.3m in WON for an average first-year salary in Japan (dispatch company). You can probably get up to 2.7-2.9 in a few years once you get privates/move beyond working for a dispatch and work for a good Eikaiwa.
There is no airfare, you pay your own rent (expensive), more and more dispatch companies are requiring you to rent a vehicle from them in order to get to all your schools (around 300k per month to rent on average) and you're responsible for just about everything up to and including finding your own apartment and doing all of that. The cost of living is about twice as high as Korea if you're in the Tokyo/Saitama area as I was.
I couldn't save a penny most months. Many dispatches only pay you exactly for the hours you've taught and will deduct $100 from your pay if you're even ten minutes late (standard late fee). Also, you're required to pay for your own furnishings and pay an upfront fee for your apartment that can be over $1000 and you don't get it back.
It's also really easy to be fired. There is a startling amount of competition even for the crappiest jobs. My co-workers and I were being threatened with being fired on a regular basis and our jobs sucked horribly. We were deathly afraid of being fired because if we were fired, very few of us had enough money to get back home. |
Exactly. Japanese culture is awesome and unique. The people are cool. The girls are a-ma-zing. But working and cost of living suck.
I couldn't save at all in Tokyo and often had to get pay advances just to get by. Even eating at noodle shops 3 times a day wasn't cutting it. They just don't pay enough to teach there. Even university profs don't have a lot of throwing around money.
I finally had to throw in the towel and come here. Those first few months, I had so much money, I didn't know what to do with it. Korea was great for a while, just because it was new and exciting, then it wore off.
I wish I could combine the two. The great money and work environment and cost of living with the culture and people of Japan. I'd never leave.
On a second note. about the fear of getting fired and being hung out to dry - it's real. It's a saturated market and employers can hire and fire as much as they like, because there's always 10 teachers for every job. Let's hope it doesn't get like there here any time soon.
I had some friends at Nova. When it went under, those guys didn't even have enough saved to live on till they found a new gig. They ended up all moving into the same tiny apartment to save on rent and had their student's moms bring them food each day. Tokyo is too expensive for it's own good. |

Who cares what your friend from Australia thinks? I've been to Japan and plenty of other Asian countries, but that wouldnt tell me if Koreans dressed similar to Americans now would it?
Koreans dont dress anything like Americans. Someone in America that had similar fashion habits to a Korean would be called either a hipster or a fashion disaster.
I'm not saying Korean style is bad...it's just not acceptable in America.
And I'm pretty sure the closest thing to America without actually going to America is Canada. |

Mmm, Koreans may have their own style, but most of it comes from American and some European fashion (just a few years after the fact). I have even had conversations with older Korean women who have confirmed this...
But, back on topic, Japan > Korea. Based on my own personal antecdotes and sweeping generalizations, most Japanese wonder why anyone would choose to live in Korea. So, good luck finding what you're looking for! |

Tell that to the increasing number of Japanese buying property in and around Busan. I think it has a lot to do with the more stable ground in Korea (literally). |

I'd say Americans are behind in most fashion, however I do agree with Koreans being slightly behind European trends (by months, not years). |

Ahh, I didn't know. It makes sense that the only reason they would choose to do so is in order to keep themselves alive (though after a while here, I doubt they will feel very much "alive" at all).

I agree that many Americans have a joke-worthy sense of fashion. At the same time, I hold my point that Korea is even further behind than America. These people are wearing what I wore when I was 16...
...and on a side note (as it is not really considered "fashion" but moreso considered "style"), enough with the American merchandise clothing. "Yeah, Korea is the best country in the world and we'll laugh at anything strange that an American may be wearing" (all the while WE are the ones wearing an American shirt with chuck taylors and an MLB hat). Fools... |
