We got a ring from Tiffianys in the USA and saved about 35 to 40 percent over the bloated prices here. My mom wore it on a neck chain when they came for the wedding.

This paying "duty" is scaring me a little bit. I plan on buying from a jeweler in NYC that I know, and he is going to mail the ring here.
Do I still have to pay tax on it then?!

Skip the engagement ring but buy a nice wedding ring. We got our rings on bluenile.com and had them shipped to our honeymoon location in Hawaii to avoid Korean customs (she just wore it back to Korea). Hers was perfect but mine required a slight refit which cost about 5,000 won.

They're great rings and we both wear them all the time.

Same here. Blue Nile rocks- my mom is bringing our wedding rings over.

I don't trust Korean dealers when it comes to precious metals.

Same with the wedding, its about her. If she wants korean style, then that's how it is or western. Her choice. Wedding. Venue. The wedding is about her. Its her day.

There's a Western idea for you.

Another option might be to buy custom rings. My sister and her husband went to an artist who custom made them some rings and even consulted with them on the design. I don't know where to find people who make original jewelry here, though.

I know a fantastic metal worker that also makes jewelry. She's made wedding bands and couple rings, so I am sure a western style engagement ring would be a piece of cake. PM me if you want her contact info. She lives in Seoul.

The thing about marriage is that since you are going to be breaking up at some point you want to ensure that you can maximize your ROI. As other posters have pointed out, diamonds have much lower resale value than most other precious metals because they have no value other than to the woman who managed to wheedle it out of some poor sap in the first place. But gold on the other hand will always have a more reasonable original price to resale value-sometimes even much more.

Buy 2 oz of gold bullion and take it to a ring maker. It is critical you get a good one as they can hold back some of the gold when they actually make it so be sure he weighs the final product for you. There will be some loss in the manufacturing of the ring but it should be close to 2 oz in weight. The cash value based on today's value is $3600. Now the ring is going to cost more than that because of the design and jeweler's profit but it shouldn't be more than 25% more-if it is-ask for a simpler design. So now you have a ring that should cost you around $4500. (If you really want to impress her and save some $ design it yourself-just google it) That's it-no other precious stones that will cost a fortune but have low resale value. You can explain a heavy gold ring to her as much more valuable than a diamond and give her some BS that the value of the ring will grow as your love grows (rotflmao). Given the buzz around gold today and the fact that S Korea is one of the biggest buyers of bullion right now, she, her friends and family are going to be quite impressed.

Let's say you make it to 10 years with her (doubtful, but maybe you'll get lucky and she won't get fat, frumpy and forty before then) In the last 10 years gold has increased 400% and regardless of the condition of the ring, even though 24k gold is soft and will scratch easily, you are still going to get close to the value of the weight because it is just melted anyway. You might even get it back sooner as her fingers become as thick as the rest of her.

Your only problem will be how to get the ring from her but as long as you plan for "that day", you'll be ready. And even if gold declines in value (doubtful) at least there is a ready market for it. The used diamond market is bust.

This method is not without risk but at least you have a chance of getting most if not even more of your investment back whereas you have little chance of getting much back from a diamond.

It would be a lot cheaper in the long run to not get married and continue to find new single women when you reach that 3-4 yr period of "OMG what was I thinking?" that happens in every relationship followed by a few years of hell and then lots of affairs until you enter the final "coyote arm" stage. But if you do, use these years to plot how to easily recover your investment. Actually, you can use it to break the bad news to her as she goes to put on her ring one day and can't find it. You can tell her it's time for a little chat as you have already sold it and are planning a trip to Thailand with the proceeds to celebrate the dumping.

Think I'm wrong?-If you do get married and buy her a diamond ring, save this post and then read it in 10 years. Was I right or what?

You should just ask her.

"Wife, would you like the more expensive or less expensive ring?"

Something tells me she'll probably go for the more expensive ring! Laughing

SAVE MONEY.

She is going to cheat you in the end and take all your money and possessions anyway. You need to set yourself up with a secret offshore account and save that money.
