| Does Rick Perry actually have a chance? I just need to know so I can start looking for a new planet to move to before the election. |

Polls: Perry v. Obama
He has a chance. I think Perry would lose Ohio, though. A Republican candidate can't win today without Ohio.

I'm with weso1.
In my book, it's highly suspect to say you are really for something...once a dozen or so changes are made. It's also somewhat of a 'which walnut shell is the pea under' con game to say you are for states rights, except when you want to use amendments to force the states to follow your opinion on social issues.
I agree the Perry-Rubio ticket has a chance to be nominated. However, they will be found dead under a mountain of tea bags and Depends, when it is learned that they think Social Security is unconstitutional and has destroyed our will to be self-reliant. |

Widespread Panic That Rick Perry Might Actually Win
| Quote: |
Business Insider's John Ellis argues that the Republican nomination is now Perry's to lose: "It will take something serious, something big and proven to bring him down." But it's not just liberals panicking over that thought. Conservatives are, too. Last week we noted that establishment conservatives fear a Perry-provoked culture war--a surprising development, given that in red-vs.-blue, even the most uppity conservatives get to act like they killed their dinner with their bare hands while liberals are stuck sipping various beverages in a most dainty manner. "[F]olksiness isn't a substitute for seriousness," National Review's Jonah Goldberg said. Perry's "primary flaw appears to be a chesty, quick-draw machismo that might be right for an angry base but wrong for an antsy country," The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan warned.
Hot Air's Jazz Shaw frets that Perry might be "Obama's last, best hope." Obama "might be seeing a slender ray of light on an otherwise fairly dark electoral horizon" with Perry's new dominance of the 2012 field, Shaw writes, because he plays perfectly into Democrats' favorite ways to demonize Republicans:
| Quote: |
Team Obama must be smiling, thinking of how Perry is already filming their own attack ads for them every time he comes out and says that Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme. ... Poll after poll shows that while Americans have slowly come to realize that some changes will need to be made to the program, they oppose any cuts in benefits by a huge margin.
Come debate time, I assume that Obama will already have some sound bites warmed up and ready to go. "I'm the guy who's trying fix and save Social Security for you. And over there youve got the guy calling it a Ponzi Scheme. Who ya gonna trust?" |
|
Obama could beat Perry. Perry must be opposed at all costs. |

| As long as Obama is president, I would prefer to live in exile overseas. If Perry wins (a real nightmare scenario), I will most certainly not return either. Either way, it totally sucks. Ron Paul is the only candidate I would vote for (and if he were ever to win, I would definitely move back and devote myself to new beginnings and do my part to help repair the immeasurable damage that has been done to our country during the past few administrations). Casting my vote for any of the others would feel to me like endorsing a dictator. |

Ahhh...you lost in 1788 and again in 1865.
I can see why you continue to whine.
The plurality of the Election of 1860 said we wanted Lincoln and one nation. Your side said, 'No!'. The election was enforced by the war. You lost a second time.
I can see why you would continue to whine. Those less evolved would do that. |
Lincoln was a Republican. Follow Ya-ta Boy's advice and vote Republican in the general election. |

Some people need to drag out a history book more than once a century or so. |

Back from vacatoin and aleady I'm breaking a promise to myself by posting..lol...anyway, the Republican establishment wants Romney. They believe he has the best chance against Obama.
Perry got a big bounce with his announcement. The religious right and Tea Party folks of the party like him. Not too sure about the more moderate Republicans though, especially the fiscally conservative, socially moderate ones.
Who ever wins it comes down how many of the handful of states that 'matter' for the election to a certain extent: Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan and a couple others.
i think Obama will lose Florida to either Romney or Perry, so it comes down to can either beat him in Ohio.
Frankly, I'm not impressed by either. Both will propose to do what every Republican says we should do: cut taxes for the rich, loosen regs, cut capital gains taxes, cut or change social security and medicare/medicaid.
Probably increase the defense budget but won't say they will till after they are in office, increase and expand domestic oil production., etc
Will these things turn the economy around? My guess is no. My guess is the mess is so big no one can really fix it. They can make it worse and exasperate it but can't fix it on its own.
Massive infrastructure spending is what I woud propose. Its needed. Far bigger than what Obama tried to do. |

This may have changed. Huntsman (Mr. 1%) has been getting a huge push in the media this last week. It looks to me like they are trying to build him up as a Romney Lite so they can switch since Romney looks so weak.

I take a broader, less partisan view. I would prefer the GOP nominate someone who, should he or she win, would not totally wreck the Republic. At this point, I don't see anyone in the Republican field, or the party for that matter, that fits that definition. Just defeating Obama for the sake of defeating Obama should not be the goal. I can see where someone would back a Dem who is pushing stronger Wall Street regulation, a very expansive jobs program, a roll-back of the Patriot Act, an end to Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy, a public option in health care...but I have yet to hear of a Republican doing any of those things.
If there are any religious rightists out there, I'd appreciate an explanation of why Texas is burning and Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are getting historic amounts of rain. Didn't RP (Rick Perry, not Ron Paul--same same) pray hard enough? I don't mean to be facetious. If god uses weather as a blunt-ended message, or even a weapon, and Texas had a big religious meeting as a send-off for Rick Perry's candidacy, why is it still so awful in Texas? [I'm very uncomfortable having religion inserted into politics so directly, but Santorum, Bachmann, and Perry are all doing it.] |

Opposing Obama isn't necessarily partisan. Listen to his Labor Day speech:
"Prove you'll fight just as hard for tax cuts for middle-class families as you do for oil companies."
He's running on the Bush tax cuts for 98% of this population. Still. In 2012. This is unacceptable for those of us who oppose cutting taxes while keeping a robust military flung across the globe and engaged in 2-3 wars. |
