| I'll go into M2 stone sober and dance just to shake it to the music. You're just being a prima donna. Dance music isn't about drugs or being seen or drinks, it's about... wait for it... dancing. |

yay! let's dance to drug music without the drugs.
oh, but it's about the "Scene." pfffffft.
Also, RTL? WTHITIYDMMA? What the hell is that if you don't mind me asking? |
RTL = right to left
In the hospitality industry it refers to customers who select what they want to eat and drink based on price by reading the menu right to left.
In terms of EDM, just like in any genre there's a crapload of really, really bad stuff out there. Just like in hip hop for every Mos Def there are 1,000 Wacka Flocka Flames, in EDM for every George F. Zimmer (progressive house producer, fine example of his work here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dhiUOl8RAQ ) there are 1,000 Spankers.
And just like, say, indie rock, it takes a LOT of exploration and experimentation to find groups, styles, artists, and genres that suit you. 5 or 6 years ago I felt the same way but then I took the time to educate myself and found a whole new world. Shining, shimmering splendor.
A great way to explore EDM is Beatport. You can browse genres, charts, labels, artists, etc. I purchase 90% of my tracks there.
Most people just hear what is played in clubs and write it all off, but do some digging and you'd be amazed at what is being produced out there. |

that's fine, but you are merely someone who is just out for a ride, a spectator so to speak in the scene.
but frankly bars would fail if they didn't serve booze now wouldn't they?
bars would fail if music was not played in them either.
yes there are non smoking bars, there are non alcoholic bars, yes there are bars which don't play music.
but come on. we all know what drives the bar scene. "DRUGS!"
IE- alcohol!
if you're going to tell me booze is not a drug.. then I will end the conversation here. |

|

Hi Guys,
One of my friends wants to move over here to teach English. I want to advertise the top ten places for him to see in Korea, could you guys give me some good recommendations?
(i.e. DMZ, Han River, etc.)?
Thanks, |

I'm not a big fan of house/techno music. Maybe its because all the DJ's in Korea suck at transitions. You are dancing, having a great time, and suddenly the music shifts gears dramatically and everyone is kinda standing around for a few seconds trying to pick up the new beat.
It seems all the house/techno music is the same at all the clubs.
Fast beat, then to no percussion and just melody, then the music gets louder, people start "Whoooo!"ing, then the beat kicks in real loud.
Rinse and repeat that all night long. Throw in the irregular song changes where the beat goes from 4/4 to a 3/4 and the tempo changes drastically.
Thats just my personal opinion though. |
Where have you been hanging out? |
Hey Seoulsucker,
You seem like a club expert, so I want your advice.
-have some friends coming to visit and wanna show them a good club
-some are 30 so no clubs with a young crowd (i.e., early 20s)
-they'll want to interact with KOREAN girls (they're coming to experience Korea after all) so I guess a club that has more of a "pickup" atmosphere if there is such a thing
Since they don't speak Korean, we'll ALSO probably check out an Itaewon club, where the probability of K girls speaking English is higher.
So could you recommend a club in Itaewon and a club in another area (e.g., Gangnam)?
Some people have recommended Octagon and Phantom? Your thoughts?
Music's not important; the crowd and pickup atmosphere are the main things.
Thanks!

The "in" spot right now in Seoul is a place called "District" that has three large venues under one roof. There's a pub & grill on the first floor, and the second floor is split into a luxury lounge and club. The club is medium/boutique sized, but still a bigger space that any other venue in Itaewon.
The lounge is a big pick up spot, and the club is really starting to take off. It's an older, classier crowd.
It's directly behind the Hamilton Hotel, you can actually get to it from the lobby of the hotel. Call way in advance if you want to book tables, though.
Octagon and Ellui are also good bets if you want to head south of the river to a "super club" but the vibe at District is really different than anything that has been done in Seoul before.
The other spot I would check out would be |

Thanks a lot! There's another spot you were gonna suggest?
Ellui is nice and big, but it kinda seemed more of a place where people go to party exclusively with their friends (e.g., the table arrangement).
What happened to Club Answer? Is it dead now? |

Answer seems to have weathered the storm. Most clubs here have a shelf life of around 2.5 years before they're closed down/renovated/re-branded. They had a hiccup a few years ago when they attempted some half-cocked theater/performance art thing called "Le Nuit Blanche" but they managed to recover and regain their clientele. 5 years and going strong, though it is a much younger crowd with a really hard electro dance music policy.
They have a mean street team that keeps the place busy most nights and when they do outside promotional parties the place is bonkers.
I am very plugged in to the scene here and actually work in the industry full time...PM me the dates you're looking at and I can give you an idea of great events or parties. |

I dont have enough posts to PM you, sorry.
They're coming this weekend--so we're probably gonna go Fri, Sat, and maybe Sunday.
I know Krome is holding something this Sat at Answer, but let me know if there's anything better.
Any good after hours, as well? |

Krome parties at Answer are usually pretty solid, especially in the summertime, which is their peak season. Krome itself is comprised of Korean/Americans...a lot of their clientele are Ko-Ams living here, or Koreans who live and study overseas and come home for the summer and winter breaks. Be prepped to hear more English at Answer during a Krome party than you do anywhere in Itaewon these days.
A lot of places dub themselves after-hours joints, but nothing can really hold a candle to Club Double-Eight. They rock well into the daylight hours. Wild, wild crowd *yet really well-behaved, unlike the drunken trash at the early AM Itaewon bars* with decent music and a lot of...ahem, industry girls that usually make for a fun time.
I'll PM you...you should be able to respond. |

Any good clubs in Seoul that play mostly hip hop and american top 40?
And by good I mean decent-good male to female ratios and not overrun with foreigners.
Im not much of a techno / house guy.
Only managed to find one club I liked in Busan. |

Update on Club Octagon at Hakdong Station in Seoul.
Just got denied because I was TOO OLD. Or if I had 650,000 won to spare on table service, that might have gotten me in. (insert multiple f-words) The first floor is for reservations and the 2nd floor is where the age limit begins, ages 20-35 only.
For the ladies, you've got to have the right kind of shoes to get in as well. I don't know exactly what style passes through, but I saw a number of girls dressed in typical club style get denied because of their shoes.
A little info on the flyer could've saved me a trip. Hope this info helps someone save some money. |
