The second you give them notice is the very instant that they'll either lie and say they already returned the things to you or lie and say some government office has it and cannot return it or lost it.

Of course, that's also the same time that you get fired without notice or payment.

Went to an interview with a hagwon in Dongtan earlier this year. They said they would be holding my degree, passport and ARC card. They said that if I needed any of them, they would send someone to escort me.

I told them to run along outside and play hide and go **** themselves. Amazing they'd try to pull that crap someone who has been here for years.

OP: Tell 'em where to go an snatch your passport back.

Name that hagwon.

I'd love to but because I'm in Korea now and the whole libel thing... when I leave Korea, I intend to write about all of that stuff.

If you don't want them to know you're thinking of leaving, you could make up another reason for needing the degree. For example, you could say you need it to apply for an online MA or something.

Good luck!

Yes, she needs her diploma because you need to apply to some M.A. programs. I am not sure I would give such types notice. I say stick it to them, and do a midnight run. The boss isn't honorable. It's too bad such things are still common.

I am glad you got it back. You said the boss took some money from the first pay check and dishonest in general?

Yeah, I'm glad he gave it back, was kind of expecting him not to.

I dont think he's dishonest in general, but yes they did money from our first month and didnt say what it was for..

Overall, I don't think he is a bad person...but I have heard so many stories that I am concerned that they wont pay us at the end of our notice.
We have not yet got that money back, because we havent mentioned anything...plus the labour board said it would take time to investigate.

To be honest, I'm OK with them keeping it, provided they dont take anything else off us...

In the end, though, Im willing to risk it and play it fair. I really dont want to leave the school on bad terms, but we dont want to stay another 9 months either.

We are hoping for a letter of release.
