Well, not showing up won't do anything for "the just cause" (Pfffftttttt)...it will just make you look like a jerk. Yes, we all know the real story, but it sounds like he already told you and you have now gone home for the day and may well have missed your best chance.
You should go in to work today, and calmly sit down with your director and just be totally honest about how you feel. Don't go in with your guns blazing and start talking law, broken contracts, etc... . Be respectful and courteous...remember, him backing off on this issue may be embarassing in some obscure way, and the Koreans have a hard time with this.
I agree that you can't just let it slide....not for the greater purpose of helping guys like ilsanman, but just to send him the message that he can't keep changing the contract on a whim. Be tactful about how you handle this...a little brown-nosing could get you the day you deserve.
Please flamers, don't get on your high horses about how we shouldn't have to do this, blah, blah....your one little act of defiance (not showing up) will do more to hurt our reputation...another log on the fire. Just laugh inside and read whatever farcical lines the script in the wacky Korean drama calls for.
It doesn't hurt you at all to do this (your pride, integrity, rights), and it may get you your time.
It's just an act, man. |

I think the original poster is trolling....
All koreans KNOW that it is a National Holiday! They are expecting a day off!
Even the worst contract has national holidays off!!!!
Besides, it's the law!!!
So, if you are working, it's because you want to. |

My hogwon is one of those places that will suck every hour they can out of you, whether or not it's in your contract. Teachers before me have complained to little avail. I work hours that are not in my contract (including some Saturdays) without overtime unless it exceeds the number of weekly hours in my contract.
Besides, when I say that the end of my contract is soon, I mean it is DAYS away...
Edit: Eeeek! I'm the only one who's voted Yes! |
I missed this comment before I posted.....
Sorry to hear about your overall situation. I guess tomorrow isn't such a surprise then, eh? Still, I stand behind what I said before, even though this director seems to be a sonofagun.
If the end is so near, then yeah, let it ride. Do nothing in your classes. play "the hagwon game" with your students. You play the director and the students play the teacher. The rules are simple; you want to make as much money as you can, and they want to have their contracts honored. Writing practise (you make the "contracts" together), speaking practise (as you move through the calendar [say days go by instantly] and these discussions are the teachers meetings at the endof the day) to defend their contracts as you try to screw them at every opportunity, and finally, you will feel better, having essentially outlined to the students what you face every day. I have never played this game....it just came to me now. I think it may be fun....I will go and flesh it out.
Anyways, good luck! |

Perfectly correct. But that doesn't seem to stop them.

So I have worse than the worst?

I don't want to spend a minute more in this hole than I have to. But I want to see the successful and final completion of this contract more than I want this holiday off. |

Everytime you lay down to an illegal demand, it makes it harder for all of us to stand up to our bosses. . |
How do you figure? Is his boss going to tell all the other hakwon directors in Korea, and are they going to expect this of all their teachers? Not likely at all.
Oddly enough I have heard this argument many times before, yet I have never heard anyone arguing the reverse: that everytime you stand up, it makes it easier for all of us to stand up to our bosses.
Whether or not it is easy or difficult to stand up to one's boss DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON THE TEACHER, NOT ANYONE ELSE. Exactly how does another teacher (who doesn't even work at your school) affect this?
Even if they did work at your school, just say "no". If they say "well, our last teacher did" just say "I'm not the last teacher, I want the contract honoured." |

I think a nice phone call to the labor board reporting this illegal behaviour might go a long way
Let the government fight your battles for you. Worst case scenario they dont do anything.
You could always make the call anonomously
But you are right, with only days to go I wouldnt sweat it too much. |

| It's a National Holiday, you idiots!!!!!! It is illegal for them to have you work on this day. Did you even bother to read your contract! As much as they need you...and you let them walk all over you. You are what is making the business run. Take a stand! But I'm sure that your boss is happy because he is probably bagging some extra jack and this will help pay for his next tropical vacation. Maybe he will send you a postcard that says, " Dear Babo, we're having a great time here in Fiji. Thanks for your hard work during Buddha's day. That holiday helped pay for our holiday. Regards. Mr. and Mrs. Park". |

It's totally illegal to have anyone working on a holiday in Korea. That's why NO ONE IS WORKING TODAY. No taxis, no buses, no convenience stores, no hospitals, no restaurants.
I actually think that the law doesn't apply to small businesses. Who knows? |

| Expect to see a complaint thread on this place veeeeeeeery soon. Working certain holidays is a joke, but it's not anywhere near the worst that they've done. |
