There's a difference between gas station sunglasses and Oakleys, but there's basically zero difference between mid-range brands like Oakley or Rayban and high-end designer stuff (Prada, Versace, D&G). They're all manufactured by the same Italian company, Luxottica.

Oh they also own LensCrafters.

It's quite a racket they've got going on.

Luxottica and Safilo make different types of frames. There are low end, mid range, and top tier grade frames. The plastics are different. The hinges are different. The temple pieces are different.

There is a marked difference in quality.

Someone should tell that to whoever made the absurdly expensive eyeglasses I was pushed into buying and stupidly fell for. I have to re-screw the hinges at least once a week. Maybe mine just stink.

More accurately, I'd say there's a marked-up difference in quality.

Consider the following:

Quote:
The cost of a new pair of glasses will of course reflect materials and labor. But the price will also reflect brand values and marketing -- and how much consumers will pay. Luxottica says it makes a gross profit of 64 cents on each dollar of sales. Even after deducting sales and advertising costs, overhead, and brand licensing royalties, it's still making 52 cents. That's some margin.

Yes, and the retail stores mark up the frames up to 300%. There is still a difference in quality. My 2 pairs of Kawasaki rimless frames cost the store $125 each at cost (frames only) and were sold to customers for $325 before lenses were added. I've had them for 9 years and have only had to replace the rubber stoppers (Kawasakis don't use screws) when having lenses changed.

My Ralph Lauren plastic frames are 8 years old and are a type of plastic that bends easily at a certain temperature. The cheapo ones that I had as a kid snapped even when heated. The cheapo frames cost the store $2 and they sell for between $50 and $100. The ones I got cost the store $75 and retailed for $215.

My BCBG frames are titaniumnot some crappy base metal. They are so light that I can hardly feel them now.

My titanium Calvin Klein half rims have only ever had the lenses and clear wire on the bottoms replaced.

The Gucci frames, just the nose pads and lenses.

Both pairs of Versace glasses have had no issues.

The list goes on. Do your research first. Test the temples, weigh them, and make sure they are adjusted to your head perfectly before you leave the store. If they are a perfect fit and you take them off and put them on with 2 hands, rather than at one corner, the screws won't loosen and they will last many years.

Back to the OP:

What bags do you like?

Ha, NYC_Gal, thanks for all the information.

I do believe expensive glasses frames are expensive for good reasons, young kids are buying cheap stuffs (without lens) to just look cool, that's another story.

I still miss the days when we took off our cheap glasses and there were two green spots on each side of our nose bridge. No one knew what that was, just something we could laugh about.

I have around 10 bags in my apartments, including 2 laptop bags, 1 reebok shoulders bag, 1 adidas sports bag, 2 small leather, 1 big leather , 2 canvas, 1 very chinese looking knitting handbags.

I don't have any expensive handbags, all of mine look ugly too ( I am not the right one to talk about bags with. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Most western girls I met here have a small shoulder bag that is a little bit bigger than a purse. I really like that.

Today my dog ate my super-light glasses. We just started letting him have the run of the apartment when we're out, rather than his cage, and I didn't think he could get to them on the night table. Crafty little devil.

Hmm. I don't NEED a new pair, but it does make me want to get something new. I do love the funky plastic ones I see here. Maybe something orange?
